Mets:
  • Mets batters recorded 11 hits with runners in scoring position…It’s their most such hits in a game since their 12 hits with RISP on May 3, 2017 vs. Atlanta… Their .351 batting average with RISP this month is the best in the NL and the second-best in the majors, trailing only Toronto (.360).
  • The Mets recorded 13 unanswered runs tonight…They have done so one other time this season (also: 4/28 at WAS, 15 unanswered runs)...It’s the 30th time in Mets history that the team has scored at least 13 unanswered runs…Courtesy of Elias.

Luis Torrens (3-5, 2B, HR, 4 RBI, 2 R):

  • Plated one with an opposite field double in the fifth inning…Hit a three-run homer in the seventh to increase the Mets lead to 10-3…Drove in one with a single in the eighth…Recorded a career-high five RBI and was his first RBI since July 20 vs. Cincinnati.

Mark Vientos (2-3, 2 2B, 2 RBI, R, HP):

  • Hit an RBI double in the fourth to put the Mets on the board…Lined a go-ahead RBI double to right field in the fifth inning to put the Mets in front 4-3…Marked his second career game with multiple doubles (also: 7/10/24 vs Washington)... Extended his hitting streak to eight games and he is hitting .387 (12-31) over that span
Newsday: "It’s only one game, but the Mets may have found the road back into the race for the NL East title. They entered the opener of their three-game set with division-leading Philadelphia staring at a season-worst seven-game gap and, after a slow start that put them in a three-run hole, launched an impressive five-inning offensive in which they scored 13 unanswered runs en route to a 13-3 victory before 41.983 on Monday night at Citi Field."

Abbey Mastracco NY Daily News: "The Mets chased Sanchez from the game in the sixth. An NL Cy Young frontrunner, Sanchez coughed up a season-high six runs (five earned) in the loss (11-5). For a team that has struggled to hit left-handed pitching all year, they’ve handled some tough lefties well this month. They piled on the seventh, taking four runs off scuffling Jordan Romano to go up 10-3."

Mike Puma NY Post: "Kodai Senga, pitching on normal rest for the fourth time in his career — the Mets have regularly allowed him to pitch every sixth or seventh day instead of on the fifth — slogged through four innings. Overall, he surrendered three earned runs on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts over 93 pitches."

NY Post: Mets-Phillies game delayed by bizarre outfield microphone complaint. "The Phillies, visiting Citi Field to play their NL East rivals, caused a minutes-long delay in the top of the fifth inning when they claimed they were distracted by the glare off a parabolic microphone in the outfield."

NY Post Sports+: Francisco Alvarez’s recovery surprise a welcome sight to Mets: ‘Couldn’t believe it’ "Alvarez took batting practice against a high-velocity pitching machine on Monday and is scheduled to repeat the process on Tuesday. Mendoza’s expectation is Alvarez will begin a minor league rehab assignment as soon as Wednesday." Jon Heyman NY Post Sports+: Jonah Tong is Mets’ last hope for season-saving spark — and it’s time to use him. "The Mets need a shot in the arm, and exciting right-hander Jonah Tong is the answer of the day...The 22-year-old Tong is often compared to Tim Lincecum in style, and now with the rapid development of this seventh rounder of Markham, Ontario, Canada, his ridiculous stats (58 hits allowed in 113 2/3 innings) are triggering even more mentions connected to the two-time Cy Young winner. He patterned his windup and over-the-top delivery after Lincecum after his dad Adam played him videos when he was a kid." (Subscription required)

Today in Mets History Per Ultimatemets.com:

Born on this date:

1965
At Shea Stadium, the Mets beat the Dodgers, 5-2, making Tug McGraw (2-2) the first Mets pitcher to defeat Sandy Koufax (21-7). Previously, New York had lost 13 consecutive times to the future Hall of Fame southpaw.
1968
After starting his career 0-5, Jim McAndrew gets his first major league victory when he goes the distance at Busch Stadium, blanking St. Louis on five hits, 1-0. In his first four major league starts, the Mets failed to score a run, resulting in two 2-0 and two 1-0 defeats for the 24 year-old rookie right-hander.

1993
The Mets announce that Vince Coleman will remain on paid administrative leave until the end of the season, effectively ending his playing career with the team. Co-owner Fred Wilpon's unequivocal decision that the controversial outfielder, who signed a four-year $11.95 million contract before the 1991 season, will not ever put on a Mets uniform again is the result of Coleman admitting to tossing a M-100 firecracker from a Jeep departing from a Dodger Stadium parking lot last month, injuring three people.
1996
The Mets replaced Dallas Green as their manager with Bobby Valentine, a former coach who left the organization to manage in Texas. During his stormy seven-year tenure in New York, Bobby 'V' will compile a 536-467 (.534) record and will lead the team to the NL pennant in 2000.

2008
Driving in Damion Easley with a fourth-inning groundout at Citizens Bank Park, Mets infielder David Wright becomes the first player in franchise history to have four 100-RBIs seasons. The 25 year-old has reached the plateau every year since becoming the team's regular third baseman.

2011: Chris Capuano tosses the best game of his career, throwing a two-hit shutout while striking out 13, as the Mets defeat the Braves, 6 - 0.
