NY Post: "For a second straight night, the Mets spotted the Phillies a lead, and for a second straight night an offensive explosion erased that deficit. Ryan Helsley coughed up the advantage in the eighth only for the Mets offense again to awaken in the bottom of the ninth as four consecutive singles — the last a walk-off knock from Brandon Nimmo — clinched a stirring 6-5 victory in front of 41,914 at Citi Field that made the NL East race a little more interesting."

Newsday: "The heroics were necessary due to another bad outing by Helsley, the former Cardinals closer acquired at the deadline. Nursing a 5-3 lead in the eighth, Helsley walked Nick Castellanos with one out to bring up former Met Harrison Bader, who teed off on a 99.1-mph fastball that caught a whole lot of the plate, and a whole lot of the stands. The booming 381-foot homer tied the game."

Brian Joura Mets360: "Sean Manaea struck out eight batters over 4.2 IP. He left with two runners on base and having thrown 90 pitches. Gregory Soto allowed both inherited runners to score but got out of the inning without any further damage."

NY Daily News: "The Mets answered with five runs in the bottom of the fifth, starting with Juan Soto’s RBI single against Phillies starter Jesus Luzardo. Pete Alonso followed with a two-run double against reliever Orion Kerkering, and Mark Vientos added an RBI single. The Mets led, 5-2, after Nimmo lifted a sacrifice fly to conclude the rally."

With one out in the bottom of the eleventh inning and the visiting Mets ahead of the Padres, 6-5, Lenny Dykstra's throw nails Gary Templeton at the plate when he tries to score from second base on Tim Flannery's single to center field. Knocked on his back by the runner, catcher John Gibbons, from a prone position, throws a strike to Howard Johnson, who tags out Flannery, trying to get to third base, to end the game with an unusual 8-2-5 double play.

Marlon Byrd is traded by the Mets, along with John Buck and cash, to the Pirates for a player to be named later (Vic Black) and minor leaguer Dilson Herrera. Although the outfielder is no longer on the roster, the team follows through on its planned promotion, giving away Marlon Byrd T-shirts before tonight's game.
