Giants 12 Mets 4 Post Game Notes - 8/3/2025
Brian Joura Mets360: “Austin Warren pitched four scoreless innings. Unfortunately, Frankie Montas and Ryne Stanek pitched today, too, and they gave up 12 runs, which is why the Mets got crushed in a 12-4 loss to the Giants Sunday afternoon. After a victory a week ago, the Mets are back to their losing ways on Sundays.”
Newsday: “Before Sunday afternoon’s game against the Giants, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said he wanted to see Frankie Montas attack hitters, compete in the strike zone and, most importantly, provide length. But as Montas ultimately delivered another dud in the Mets’ 12-4 loss, it’s safe to say Mendoza’s hopes went unfulfilled. Montas allowed seven runs and seven hits in four innings-plus, walking two and striking out three. The righthander was pulled after issuing a leadoff walk to Matt Chapman in the fifth, exiting to a chorus of boos from the 42,876 at a sold-out Citi Field.”
Abbey Mastracco NY Daily News: Montas retired the Giants in order in the first inning Sunday, coming back for the second with a 1-0 lead after Francisco Lindor hit home run No. 21 on the season in the bottom of the first off of left-hander Carson Whisenhunt. Once again, San Francisco went down in order in the second, but Montas fell apart in the third.
NY Post: Frankie Montas sinks Mets in brutal loss to Giantswith latest clunker that could jeopardize rotation spot. “A day after Kodai Senga lasted just four innings, Montas failed to record an out in the fifth, as the Mets continue failing to get length out of their rotation. He struggled with his location — especially on an 0-1 four-seamer to Rafael Devers with two on and one out in the third. Devers belted it into the seats for a three-run shot on the pitch Carlos Mendoza said was in ‘the nitro zone.’”

1963 | At County Stadium, Roger Craig suffers his 20th loss of the season when the Mets lose to Milwaukee, 2-1. The defeat is the right-hander's 18th consecutive setback, tying Cliff Curtis' National League mark set in 1910 with the Braves, and one loss shy of A's Jack Nabors' 1916 major league record. |
1982 | After driving in the winning run in the Mets' 7-4 victory over the Cubs, Joel Youngblood, who is traded to the Expos during the game, flies to Philadelphia and singles for Montreal to become the first player to have a hit for two different teams on the same day in different cities. The 30 year-old All-Star collects his two historic hits off two future Hall of Famers, a single off Ferguson Jenkins in Chicago, and gets his other knock off Steve Carlton in the City of Brotherly Love. |
1985 | On the same day Tom Seaver records his 300th victory, Mets' phenom Doc Gooden wins his 11th consecutive game, breaking Tom Terrific’s franchise mark established in 1969. The 20-year-old right-hander, going the distance, beats the Cubs at Wrigley Field, 4-1, to improve his record to 17-3 this season. |
1985 | In a 4-1 complete-game victory at Yankee Stadium, White Sox right-hander Tom Seaver becomes the 17th player in major league history to record his 300th victory, limiting the Bronx Bombers to six hits, all singles. Owner George Steinbrenner becomes irate when the fans start chanting 'Let's Go Mets,' as an homage to the beloved right-hander, who spent the 12 years with his team's crosstown rivals. |
2006 | In the Phillies' 5-3 victory over the Mets, Chase Utley's hitting streak ends at 35 consecutive games. Philadelphia's second baseman, who goes 0-for-5, has the fourth-longest stretch in National League history. |
2012 | Mike Baxter sets a team record and ties a National League mark when he walks five times in a nine-inning game in the Mets' 6-4 victory over San Diego at Petco Park. Only five of the 25 pitches thrown to the New York right fielder were strikes, with thirteen of the final 14 being out of the strike zone. |
2016 | Bartolo Colon becomes the first pitcher in the history of the Subway Series to record a victory as a member of both New York clubs when the visiting Mets beats the Bronx Bombers, 4-1. In 2011, Big Bart, in his only season with the Yankees, pitched six strong innings of shutout ball to earn a 5-2 victory over the Big Apple rivals at Citi Field. |
1962: After a doubleheader loss to the Mets, 9 - 1 and 3 - 2 in 13 innings at the Polo Grounds, Reds manager Fred Hutchinson stays in the dugout instead of joining his players in the clubhouse. He then calls the clubhouse and tells the players to be out of there in 15 minutes. They do. Hutch has tickets for Zero Mostel's A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, but doesn't use them.
1966 - Pinch-hit home runs by Mets John Stephenson and Ron Swoboda make the difference in New York's 8 - 6 defeat of the Giants at Shea Stadium.
1969 - The Reds win another squeaker, this time 1 - 0 over the Mets at Crosley Field. Jim Maloney (5-2) allows two hits and beats Jerry Koosman.
1997: At Shea Stadium, the Mets top the Cards, 4 - 2, in a rain-interupted game. Rick Reed (10-4) wins his 6th straight, beating Manny Aybar, making his major league debut. Lance Johnson has a pair of RBI triples. Completing an unusual major league-minor league sweep, the Pittsfield Mets top the New Jersey Cardinals (NY-Penn League), 8 - 4, in the earlier 9-inning game.
2001: In a 4 - 2 Mets win at Arizona, Mark Grace ends the game with a ground ball single, which hits pinch runner David Dellucci for the last out as Dellucci is charged with interference. It's the D-backs 7th loss in nine games.
2009: Albert Pujols ends a brief slump with two home runs, including a 10th-inning grand slam, as the Cardinals beat the Mets, 12 - 7. The extra-inning blast comes after Mark DeRosa is plunked by Sean Green with the bases loaded to drive in the go-ahead run; it ties Ernie Banks's National League record of 5 slams in a season, set in 1955, and is his League-leading 36th homer of the year.
