TAMPA, Fla. (August 8, 2025) – The St. Lucie Mets pounded the Tampa Tarpons 10-4 in game 1 of Friday's doubleheader at the Yankees Complex next to George M. Steinbrenner Field. Game 2 was postponed due to inclement weather. The teams will attempt another doubleheader on Saturday starting at 12:00 p.m.
In the lone seven-inning game that was played Friday evening, the Mets pounded out 10 runs on 10 hits while tying a franchise record by stealing 11 bases.
The contest was competitive early. The Mets held a 2-0 lead through four innings after scoring runs on a wild pitch and a throwing error by Tampa catcher Josue Gonzalez.
The Mets broke the game open by scoring three runs in the fifth inning. Trey Snyder and Trace Willhoite brought in runs on a fielders' choices while Daiverson Gutierrez hit a sac fly as the Mets built a 5-0 lead.
The Mets scored two more runs in the sixth when Gutierrez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Willhoite hit a RBI single to make it 7-0.
St. Lucie capped a productive day at the plate with three more runs in the seventh on a two-run single from Simon Juan and a Jeremy Rodriguez sac fly.
Willhoite and Juan each went 2 for 4 with two RBI. AJ Salgado went 2 for 3 with a double, walk and a run.
Rodriguez went 1 for 2 with a double, two walks and three runs from the leadoff spot.
The Mets went 11 for 11 in stolen base attempts. Yonatan Henriquez, Snyder and Rodriguez had two steals apiece.
Mets starter Jonathan Jimenez was excellent in his third start with the team. Jimenez blanked the Tarpons over 4.1 innings. He scattered three hits, did not walk a batter and struck out four.
Joel Lara made his St. Lucie debut following Jimenez and pitched 1.2 innings to get the win. Lara was charged with two unearned runs. He gave up one hit and struck out two.
Luis Alvarez and Jorge De Leon combined for the bottom of seventh inning to close out the game.
The Mets (62-42, 28-11) are now 20 games over .500 on the season. They have won 13 of their last 14 road games and are 13-2 in their last 15 games overall.
