Syracuse, NY – Continuing an electric start to his Triple-A career, Jonah Tong led the Syracuse Mets to a 4-0 win over the Indianapolis Indians on Saturday night at NBT Bank Stadium in front of a crowd of 7,144 fans. Tong pitched six scoreless innings, struck out eight batters, and hasn't allowed a run in 11 and two-thirds innings pitched in Triple-A.
After a scoreless first, Syracuse (64-61, 33-17) got its offense going in the bottom of the second inning. To open the frame, Luke Ritter and Joey Meneses both drew walks. Next, Yonny Hernandez singled to load the bases for Ali Sanchez, who grounded into a fielder’s choice, scoring Ritter and giving the Mets a 1-0 lead. Then with Meneses at third, Luis De Los Santos hit a sacrifice fly out to right field, scoring Meneses from third base and putting Syracuse in front, 2-0.
The Mets added to their lead in the third when Jared Young doubled, moved to third base on a Pablo Reyes sacrifice bunt, and Young scored on a passed ball, extending the advantage to 3-0.
In the top of the sixth, Indianapolis (72-52, 30-20) had its best opportunity to score throughout the game. After singles by Nick Yorke and Cam Devanney, along with a throwing error by right fielder Luke Ritter, the Indians had runners in scoring position with two outs. In a 3-2 count against Rafael Flores, Tong got Flores to swing and miss at a changeup, recording Tong's eighth strikeout of the night and preserving the lead.
To add some insurance, the Mets tallied one more run in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, Hernandez singled, stole second base, and scored on an Ali Sanchez RBI double to make it 4-0.
After Tong, the Syracuse bullpen slammed the door. José Castillo pitched a scoreless seventh inning, and Dylan Ross finished the job with six outs.
Syracuse continues its six-game series with the Indianapolis Indians on Sunday afternoon. Right-hander Brandon Sproat is slated to start for the Mets with first pitch scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
