Brian Joura Mets360: "When Tylor Megill and Ryne Stanek combine for seven shutout innings with 12 Ks, you better win. And that’s exactly what happened for the Mets Monday night, as they edged the Blue Jays, 3-2. Combined with a loss by the Braves, the Mets moved into sole possession of the third Wild Card spot."

Mets took a 1-0 lead in the 4th when J.D. Martinez singled in Pete Alonso who walked with 2 out and moved to 2nd when Jose Iglesias was hit by a pitch.  After Tylor Megill threw 6 scoreless, he was replaced by Danny Young in the 7th.  After getting the fist out, Young hit Davis Schneider with a pitch and allowed a single to Alejandro Kirk Jose Butto then came in and gave up a single to Ernie Clement to load the bases, hit Leo Jimenez to tie the game at one and the Blue Jays took the lead on a Sac Fly.

NY Post: Mets capitalize on Blue Jays’ costly errors for win to move ahead of Braves in wild-card race.  "A day after their nine-game winning streak was snapped, the Mets managed only three hits, but leveraged Jesse Winker’s pinch-hit walk and Francisco Alvarez’s infield single into the tying and go-ahead runs in the eighth."

Tim Healey Newsday: Mets get Tylor Megill's best in strong start, eke out win over Blue Jays. "With a pair of runs in the top of the eighth — the first scoring on a wild pitch, the next on a passed ball...This was just the second time in 13 tries this season that Megill held the opposing team scoreless. The other came on May 28, when he shut out the Dodgers for seven innings.."

NY Post: David Peterson’s solid outing undone by Mets bullpen in loss to Twins. "David Peterson had the Twins swinging and missing, at his four-seam fastball in particular Saturday, in one of those performances that could serve as a morale booster for the inconsistent Mets left-hander....In all he allowed three earned runs over six innings in the Mets’ third straight loss, an 8-4 defeat at the hands of the Twins at Target Field...Drew Smith allowed a bases-loaded triple to Max Kepler in the seventh, giving the Twins a comfortable cushion after Peterson had kept the Mets close."

Year: 2022; Game#139; Friday  Sep 9 NYM 3 @ MIA 6; boxscore;  WP: Cabrera; LP: Peterson;  Save: Floro; Time: 3:05; NIGHT; Attendance: 12,692;  Record: 87-52; Standings: 2; Games up/behind: 0.5; L;

Brandon Nimmo CF 1 for 2, 1 RBI, 1 run scored, 2 walks; Francisco Lindor SS 1 for 4; Jeff McNeil 2B 0 for 3, HBP;  Pete Alonso 1B 1 for 4, 2 run HR,  1 run scored, 1 K;  Tomás Nido C 2 for 4, double, 1 run scored, 1 K; David Peterson (L, 7-4) 3.2 innings, 3 runs – all earned, 5 hits, 1 HR, 2 walks, 7 Ks; Tommy Hunter 1.1 innings, 1 run – earned, 2 hits, 1 walk, 1 K; Mychal Givens 2 innings, no runs, 1 walk, 1K; Joely Rodriguez 1/3 inning, 2 runs – both earned, 2 Hits, 1 HR, 2 walks; Edwin Diaz 2/3 innings, no runs, no hits, 1 K;

Newsday: "In a winnable game and with a rested bullpen, Showalter at first was proactive in his bullpen management, pulling David Peterson after 3 2⁄3 innings (three runs). Peterson was teetering, the Marlins were rallying and the Mets were at risk of letting them blow it open in the fourth inning. For a while, that worked. Tommy Hunter and Mychal Givens got the Mets into the eighth inning of a one-run game. But instead of chasing a win — using a high-leverage reliever such as Diaz or Adam Ottavino in the hopes that the Mets would come back in the ninth — Showalter turned to lefthander Joely Rodriguez. Rodriguez gave up a two-run homer by Charles Leblanc, boosting Miami’s lead to three runs. Then he walked two batters."

Year: 2020; Game #44; Wednesday;  Sep 9, NYM 7  Vs. BAL; 6; boxscore;  WP: Familia; LP: Harvey;  Save: Diaz; Time: 3:25; NIGHT;  Record: 20-24; Standings: 4; Games up/behind: 5.5; W;

Rick Porcello 4 innings, 10 hits, 5 runs, 5 ER, 0 walks, 3K, 66 pitches – 45 strikes;  Chasen Shreve, 1.1 innings, 2 hits (1 HR), 1 run, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 Ks; Jared Hughes, 1/3 innings, 0 hits, 1 walks, 1 HBP; Justin Wilson, 1.1 innings, 0 runs, 0 hits, 0 walks, 1 K, 1 HBP; Jeurys Familia (W, 2-0) 1 inning, 1 hit, 1 walk, 0 runs; Edwin Diaz (SV, 3) 1 inning, 1 hit, 1 K, 0 runs; Pete Alonso 3 for 4 (HR #11), 2 runs scpred, 1 RBI; Jeff McNeil 2 for 3 (HR #4), 3 RBIs, 1 run scored, 1 walk; Michael Conforto 1 for 3 (HR #8), 1 run scored, 1 RBI,  – now hitting .340; Andres Gimenez 1 for 4 (HR #2)1 run scored, 1 RBI; Dominic Smith 2 for 4, 1 run scored; Robinson Cano 1 for 4, 1 RBI;

Brian Joura Mets360.com: Rick Porcello is grateful that the Mets have Michael Wacha. Otherwise, there would be a ton of attention on how rotten he’s been this year. He surrendered 5 ER in 4 IP and now has a 6.07 ERA for the season.

SNY.TV: After Robinson Cano’s RBI single in the fifth cut the Baltimore lead to 6-5, Jared Hughes got into trouble in the sixth, loading the bases with two outs. The Mets then brought in Justin Wilson, but Ruiz drove a ball to deep into right field that looked to be a bases-clearing double at the least. But Conforto made the best catch of the season for the Mets, making the over-the-shoulder grab right in front of the wall to end the inning.

Mike Puma NY Post: When in doubt use the long ball. All it took was four of them on Wednesday, including an eighth-inning blast from Pete Alonso for the lead — after Michael Conforto had saved the game with a highlight-reel catch — sending the Mets to a 7-6 victory over the Orioles at Citi Field.

Mets cap off a 3-game sweep of the Nationals with another come from behind victory.  With the Nats up 2-1 in the 8th, pinch hitter Kelly Johnson leads off the inning with a game tying homer run off Steven Strasburg.  Yoenis Cespedes with a 2-run homer later in the inning off Drew Storen to give the Mets the lead for good.

NY Post: "The Mets came to Nationals Park hopeful of a series victory that would increase their NL East lead, but got the bonus: a three-game sweep that left Nationals fans to play a chorus of “Taps” on the bugle. Cespedes’ two-run homer in the eighth inning culminated a third straight come from-behind-victory for the Mets, 5-3, and buried the Nationals in a seven-game NL East hole."

Baseball ReferenceIn a rare highlight for the Nationals this season, Gio Gonzalez pitches a one-hitter and is backed by five homers as the team rolls to an easy 9 - 0 win over the Mets. Pinch-hitter Zach Lutz has the Mets' only hit, a soft single that lands on the first base foul line to open the 7th.
