From the Reds 3 Mets 1 Post Game Notes - 9/8/2024

  • MetsHad their nine-game win streak snapped.
  • Starling MarteHit a one run single in the sixth inning to give the Mets a 1-0 lead.

Brian Joura Mets360: "Last Sunday, the Mets pitched a shutout and won 2-0. For a second it looked like they were going to win with an even higher degree of difficulty, as they took a 1-0 lead into the seventh inning. But the Reds tied it in the seventh and scored two more in the ninth. And since a Constitutional Amendment has been passed saying that the Mets are no longer allowed to score more than two runs on Sunday, they fell by the score of 3-1. It snapped their nine-game winning streak and put them back into a tie with the Braves for the third Wild Card spot."

Dan Martin NY Post: Mets’ nine-game win streak ends with a whimper in loss to Reds. "The biggest issue for the Mets on Sunday, though, was the offense, which got just a run in the sixth inning on a two-out RBI single from Starling Marte.  But the top five hitters in the lineup combined to go 0-for-16 with three walks and five strikeouts against rookie right-hander Julian Aguiar and five relievers."

Evan Barnes Newsday: Mets waste Luis Severino's strong outing as winning streak ends at 9. "The tough part about streaks? They eventually end. No matter how much joy they bring, it’s only temporary. The Mets got reminded of that after their 3-1 loss to the Reds on Sunday at Citi Field. Their winning streak was snapped at nine games and so was Francisco Lindor’s on-base streak at 35 games."

NY Post: Mets waste another strong Kodai Senga outing in loss to Twins.  "For a second straight game, the Mets’ bats were quiet and the bullpen was non-compliant, in a 5-2 loss to the Twins at Target Field. Sean Reid-Foley surrendered three earned runs in a disastrous seventh inning for the Mets, who fell 12 games below .500."

The Wilmer Flores Crying and Walk-Off Homer Game, the Cespedes 3-homer game and the games against Washington in August and September - they defined the Mets 2015 playoff run and this game was dramatic.

With ace Matt Harvey on the mound, the Mets fell behind 7-1 in the 6th after Yoenis Cespedes misplayed a bases loaded single that rolled to the deepest part of the outfield scoring 4 runs.  Mets came right back in the 7th to tie the game as 12 Mets came to bat and all runs were scored with two outs.  The Nationals pen imploded as they walked 4 - the last of which was a bases loaded walk to Lucas Duda which scored the tying run.

Kirk Nieunwenhuis played here in the 8th with a pinch hit homer off Jonathan Papelbon.  Tyler Clippard a scoreless 8th and Jeurys Familia a scoreless 9th secured the win.

Mets moved to 6 games up in 1st.
