The Mets will celebrate Alfonzo's induction at their Dominican Academy on November 5.
FLUSHING, N.Y., September 12, 2025 – The New York Mets today announced that Edgardo Alfonzo has been selected to the Mets Latin American Hall of Fame. The Mets Latin American Hall of Fame honors and highlights the numerous contributions of Mets Latin players, coaches and executives that have passed through the organization over the last seven decades and into the future.
"Edgardo was a fan favorite and dynamic player on the field, contributing during pivotal moments throughout Mets history," Mets Owners Steve and Alex Cohen said. "As a beloved player, coach and alumni ambassador, Edgardo continues to have an impact on our organization, and we are thrilled for his induction into the Mets Latin American Hall of Fame class."
One of the most clutch performers in Mets history, Alfonzo, 51, consistently delivered in the game's biggest moments. At the time of his retirement, he ranked first in franchise postseason history in hits, runs scored, and RBI. Alfonzo played a pivotal role in the Mets' 1999 playoff run, homering in the one-game Wild Card playoff in Cincinnati and launching two home runs, including a grand slam, in Game 1 of the NLDS at Arizona.
"It's such an honor to be inducted into the Mets Latin American Hall of Fame," Alfonzo said. "Throughout my career, it was always an honor to play for my family, the fans, and my country of Venezuela. This achievement is for everyone who supported me and helped my dreams come true. Thank you so much to Steve and Alex Cohen, the entire Mets organization and the fans for this recognition."
A model of consistency and production, Alfonzo ranks among the Mets' all-time Top 10 in hits, runs, doubles, RBI, on-base percentage, total bases, and batting average. He was named an All-Star in 2000 and earned a Silver Slugger Award in 1999.
Following his playing career, Alfonzo began coaching with the Brooklyn Cyclones in 2014 and managed the team from 2017 to 2019, leading them to a New York-Penn League championship in 2019. He continues to contribute to the Mets organization as a guest instructor during Spring Training and works closely with minor league players, passing on his knowledge and passion for the game. Alfonzo, an infielder from 1995-2002, was inducted into the Mets Hall of Fame in 2021.
Mets senior leadership collaborated with Los Mets employee resource group in 2023 to establish the Mets Latin American Hall of Fame, which is located at the Mets Academy in the Dominican Republic.
Previous inductees include coach and advisor Osvaldo José "Ozzie" Virgil Pichardo and Mets Spanish broadcaster Juan Alicea.
Each class is selected by a committee that has been established to nominate players, coaches, broadcasters, and executives guided by the criteria set forth by its bylaws.
The induction ceremony will take place on November 5 at the Mets Dominican Academy presented by HSS. Media hoping to attend the induction ceremony should RSVP to Juan Henderson (jhenderson@nymets.com) and Alan Suriel (asuriel@nymets.com).
