After the Brewers scored two in the 4th to take a 4-3 lead, the Mets scored 5 in the 5th to take Game 1 of the 2024 Wild Card Series, 8-4. Mark Vientos, J.D, Martinez and Jess Winkler each had 2 RBIs. Jose Butto two scoreless innings in relief and Ryne Stanek, a 1-2-3 9th.
Tim Healey Newsday: Mets take Game 1 vs. Brewers thanks to five-run fifth inning, Luis Severino's late turnaround. "They beat the Brewers, 8-4, Tuesday night to grab the all-important first game in this best-of-three NL Wild Card Series. If the Mets win once more Wednesday or Thursday, they’ll advance to the Division Series against the Phillies. In the brief history of this round of the baseball playoffs, the victors of Game 1 have gone on to win the series 14 times in 16 tries."
NY Post: "After Marte was robbed of an extra-base hit on Chourio’s leaping catch at the left-field fence to begin the fifth, the Mets erupted for five runs against relievers Joel Payamps and Aaron Ashby. Taylor doubled to left and Lindor drew a two-out walk. Jose Iglesias hustled out an infield hit, diving into first base to beat the throw, for an RBI single. Vientos’ ensuing two-run single put the Mets ahead 6-4. After a wild pitch advanced Vientos to second, Alonso was intentionally walked and J.D. Martinez, pinch hitting for Winker, delivered a two-run single that buried the Brewers in an 8-4 hole."
Brian Joura Mets360: "With a four-run lead, Severino settled down and was great in his final two innings of work. He found his groove and no one would have blamed Carlos Mendoza if he sent Severino back to the mound for the seventh, even with his starter having already thrown 105 pitches."
