Yanks grab Game 2 of the 2000 Subway World Series to go up 2-0 in the Series. Yanks score 4 off Mike Hampton and add 2 more against the Mets pen. .Roger Clemens throws 8 scoreless innings, 2 hits, no walks, 9 Ks. Down 6-0, the Mets rally against Jeff Nelson and Mariano Rivera. Rivera recovered after Payton's homer to strike out Kurt Abbott to end it.
The game was not without controversy as Clemens shattered Mike Piazza;s bat in the 1st inning with the pieces flying out toward the mound. As Piazza was running to 1st, Clemens threw one of the jagged pieces toward the foul line near Piazza. Benches emptied, no punches were thrown and the game resumed.
The Mets protested the game saying that Clemens should have been ejected for throwing a bat, with Commissioner Bud Selig in attendance, the protest was denied and Clemens stayed in the game.
NY Post: "'I was fired up and emotional and grabbed the bat to sling it toward our on-deck circle,' Clemens said. 'I had no idea Mike was running on the foul ball.'...'I would have been angry,' an irate Torre said when asked how he would have felt if he were Piazza’s manager. 'But we have to ask one other question: Why would he throw a bat at him? Answer my question, why would he do it?'"
