Benny Agbayani's 8th inning double broke a 2-2 tie and Bubba Trammell's sac fly scored another as the Mets beat the Yanks 4-2 for their first Subway World Series win.
Robin Ventura homered to lead off the 2nd putting the Mets up 1-0. Yanks came right back in the 3rd to tie it up as David Justice doubled in Derek Jeter and took a 2-1 lead in the 4th as Paul O'Neil tripled in Tino Martinez. Rick Reed and the Mets pen kept it scoreless after that allowing the Mets to tie it in the 6th on doubles by Mike Piazza and Todd Zeile before they took the lead for good in the 8th.
SABR.org: "The defeat broke the Yankees’ 14-game World Series winning streak, the longest streak in championship play among the major sports."
NY Post: Benny & The Mets to the top of the Biggest Hits' Chart. "With Todd Zeile on first following a one-out single, Agbayani absolutely drilled a rocket into the left-centerfield gap, scoring Zeile and turning the Yankees into mere mortals in one swing. That hit made the Yankees World Series losers for the first time since Oct. 21, 1996 at Yankee Stadium, a 4-0 loss to the Braves. It was the Yankees first World Series loss on the road since Oct. 25, 1981.
Wallace Matthews NY Post: "Finally, the Mets and Yankees played one solid ballgame. No sideshows, no antics, no beanballs, no busted bats, no psychodramas. And finally, the Mets proved they could beat the defending World Champions when it counts, the only time it counts...Last night, for the first time in their history, the Mets beat the Yankees in October, a month they have owned for the past 80 years and a month they have had exclusive rights to for much of the past decade."
