It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. On the same date the Mets clinched the 1986 World Series, they blew a 9th inning lead and lost in 14 innings to the Royals in 2015.

Jeurys Familia allowed a game tying, 9th inning, homer to Alex Gordon and David Wright's error put the leadoff batter on in the 14th that later scored on a Sac Fly as the Mets dropped Game 1 of the 2015 World Series.
Some say it wasn't the Mets night right from the first pitch:
NY Post: "Escobar became the first player to hit an inside-the-park homer in the World Series since the Athletics’ Mule Haas in 1929 when he circled the bases on Harvey’s first pitch of the night. Escobar hit a fly to left-center that hit Cespedes’ right leg in stride and rolled toward the outfield fence. Escobar, the MVP of the ALCS, never hesitated and scored standing up."
Mets scored single runs in the 4th, 5th, and 6th to go up 3-1, but the Royals tied it back up in the bottom of the 6th. In the 8th, Juan Lagares singled, stole 2nd and scored on an Eric Hosmer error to make it 4-3 and the Mets took that lead to the 9th.
NY Post: "Alex Gordon’s ninth-inning blast to center with one out in the bottom of the ninth tied Game 1 with the Mets just two outs away from victory in what turned out to be a 5-4, 14-inning loss to the Royals in Game 1 of the World Series. 'It’s part of the game,' Familia said. 'My fastball was in the zone. I missed my spot. I wanted it away and down.'"

In their second straight come from behind win, the Mets capture the 1986 World Series 4 Games to 3 over the Boston Red Sox.
Dwight Evans and Rich Gedman hit back-to-back homers in the 2nd to give Boston a 2-0 lead. Three batters later, Wade Boggs singled in Dave Henderson to make it 3-0 Sox. Ron Darling hit Dave Henderson to lead off the 4th and when Bruce Hurst bunted him over to 2nd, Sid Fernandez came in to get Marty Barrett for the final out. After that, Sid woke up the Shea crowd with a 1-2-3 5th and 6th, striking out two in each inning.
Meanwhile Bruce Hurst was throwing shutout ball over the first 5 innings, but in the 6th, perhaps tiring after the short 3 days rest, the Mets broke through. After they loaded the bases on singles by pinch hitter Lee Mazzilli and Mookie Wilson and a walk to Tim Teufel, Keith Hernandez singled in two to bring the Mets within a run at 3-2. Gary Carter hit a bloop into RF that made Keith hold up thinking the ball was caught and he was forced out at 2nd when the ball was ruled in play but pinch runner Wally Backman scored the tying run.
World Series MVP broke the tie in the 7th with a Home Run, the Mets added 2 more to make it 6-3. Red Sox came back to score 2 off Roger McDowell in the 8th, but Jesse Orosco entered to retire 3 in the 8th and 3 in the 9th. The Mets scored 2 insurance runs in the 8th highlighted by Darryl Strawberry's homer....
Phil Pepe NY Daily News: "At 11:26 PM, Marty Barrett swung and missed on a 2-2 Jesse Orosco fastball, up and away, and a city went wild, Shea Stadium went wild, the Mets went wild. In one motion, Orosco flung his glove to the heavens, then was smothered by a mass of humanity in blue and orange Mets' uniforms that came pouring out of the home team dugout like a tidal wave."
For the second time in their history, the Mets had won the World Series.
