Breaking Report: Mets Trading Brandon Nimmo to Texas Rangers for Marcus Semien

According to Jeff Passan on X: The New York Mets are finalizing a trade that sends Brandon Nimmo to the Texas Rangers for Marcus Semien.  

The move gives the Mets a 2-time gold glove 2nd Baseman with 3 years and $75M left on his contract versus Brandon Nimmo who has 5 years, $100M left. The move improves the defense and likely foreshadows more moves to come.  

David J. Rubin's Take: "We were paying too much money for an out field that provided us with little to no defense anymore.  You do not want to put a rookie centerfielder in the middle of two bad or challenged defensive outfielders...If they signed either Tucker or Bellinger, you would be getting even better offense and substantially better defense...That could also make David Sterns more likely to keep Pete Alonso as well, because the rest of the  infield defense will be excellent and potentially the outfield defense much improved.

I am not exactly jumping for joy over this trade, but I know Semien well, having watched him in the American League for years with the Athletics and supposedly he is a fantastic guy in the clubhouse. With a return to health an excellent defense, it could be a very, very good first step in a bigger plan.

Also putting a gold glove second basement next to Pete, makes it more likely that they will be happy with the right side defense, and he can get anything that Pete cannot."
