Lots of Mets Roster related news yesterday.

First, the Mets posted that the following players declared Free Agency:

LF Starling Marte, CF Cedric Mullins, RHP Tyler Rogers, RHP Griffin Canning, RHP Ryan Helsley, LF Jesse Winker, LHP Gregory Soto and RHP Ryne Stanek

NY Post: Edwin Diaz opts out of rest of $102 million contract as Mets face free agency question. "The closer opted out of the two years and $28 million left on his contract with the Mets on Monday, The Post’s Mike Puma reported, sending him back to the open market as one of the top free agent relief arms. Díaz had signed a five-year, $102 million contract with the Mets after the 2022 campaign, which included an opt-out after this year."

Diaz, who turns 32 in March, can easily get at least an extra year in Free Agency and likely more dollars per year.

Jon Heyman on X reported that Pete Alonso has also opted out.

MLB Trade Rumors: Pete Alonso Opts Out Of Mets Contract"He declines a $24MM player option and heads back to free agency...The five-time All-Star should be better positioned this time around. He’s coming off a .272/.347/.524 showing with 38 home runs and an NL-leading 41 doubles across 709 plate appearances....Last winter also saw his market dragged down by the qualifying offer."

NY Post: Juan Soto named NL MVP finalist after first Mets season. "Juan Soto was announced as a National League MVP finalist on Monday, alongside heavy favorite and Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani and Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber. Soto, in his first season with the Mets after signing a 15-year, $765 million contract, hit .263 with a .921 OPS and career-highs of 43 home runs and 38 steals."

As we had yesterday the Baseball Hall Of Fame announced 8 candidates to be eligible to be elected as part of the Contemporary Baseball Era Committee.

Howie Rose makes a good point.
