Report: Mets sign Free Agent DH/INF Jorge Polanco to a 2-year $40M Deal

 

According to Jeff Passan on X, the New York Mets have signed Jorge Polanco to a 2 year $40M contract.  Jeff Passan states that the plan is to play him at 1st and DH.

According to MLB.com: "The 32-year-old switch-hitter had his best offensive year since 2021 with the Twins, posting a .265/.326/.495 slash line (.821 OPS) with 26 home runs and 78 RBIs...He homered twice off Tigers ace Tarik Skubal to help the Mariners take Game 2 of the American League Division Series, then came up with the walk-off hit in Game 5 to send Seattle to the AL Championship Series."

Play 1B for the first time in him minor or major league career in 2025, for one inning.  He no chances, put-outs or assists in that inning.

IMO, it is another curious move in this off-season.  The signing adds to an already crowded infield of: Semien, Lindor, Acuna, Baty, Mauricio, McNeil and Vientos.  

With this signing the Mets roster will be at 40 players.  Additional roster moves will be needed if any other free agents are added.

Jorge Polanco (signed by NYM) posted an outstanding 132 wRC+ with 26 HR last season and had a resurgence with his power metrics. The switch-hitting slugger is a pulled fly ball machine and saw his strikeout rate drop from 29.3% to 15.6%
