Thank you, Carlos – now wear our cap!!!

The recent announcement of Carlos Beltran finally making it to the baseball Hall of Fame should be a happy circumstance for New York Mets fans. While strike three versus the Cardinals is long behind us, unfortunately, many Mets fans still hold a grunge. And trashcan banging did not affect us that particular season, although it was a very horrible thing for Baseball and it ended up being pretty terrible for Beltran’s career as well as it cost him a slot managing the New York Mets. It also delayed his entry into the Hall of Fame by these past four years because many voters were reluctant to put him in on the first or second ballot due to that major rules violation.

However, talent often wins out as it did this time, and a very deserving player on the field was able to rise above his indiscretion and make it to the hallowed halls of Cooperstown. Maybe it’s time for my fellow Mets fans to forgive Beltran against the Cardinals because it wasn’t just he who failed to drive in a run and we wouldn’t have gotten that far if he hadn’t been so great that season in the first place. There is one surefire away that Carlos, in his tenure as special assistant to  president David Stearns could win back the fan base in one easy step; the day that he gets officially sworn into the baseball Hall of Fame he should be wearing a New York Mets cap! If our fan base feels like you are on our side or one of us or honors us in any way, we will be the most loyal fan base you can ever imagine. Similarly, if you do not, we can be the most disloyal and angry fan base as well.

The choice is yours to make, Carlos. Wear our cap and eventually, potentially have your number retired in Citifield and truly be a hero in New York for the rest of your career, or choose the Kansas City Royals and the chance of being embraced finally by the fan base most likely will never happen.
