Mets History Today: January 21st - Mets Trade Kris Benson for John Maine

NY Daily News Clip, 1/22/2006

Good Morning.  Happy Birthday Jake Diekman

On this date in 2006, the Mets traded starting pitcher Kris Benson for RHP Jorge Julio and RHP prospect, John Maine.

The moved cleared payroll as Benson had 2 years left in a 3 year $22.5M contract and it also was an attempt to deepen the Mets bullpen by obtaining the Orioles former closer Jorge Julio.  John Maine seemed like a thrown in prospect.

While Jorge Julio didn't make it the entire year with the Mets, Maine went on to pitch 5 years with the Mets including 2007 when he went 15-10 in 2007, 32 games, 191 innings.  His last start in 2007 was his best as he shutout the Marlins giving the Mets a chance to force a playoff for the final Wild Card spot with Milwaukee but we all know how how that final game in 2007 turned out.

The Orioles acquire a potential ace for their rotation when the team trades right-handers Jorge Julio and John Maine to the Mets for Kris Benson (10-8, 4.13). With Jae Seo dealt to the Dodgers for relievers Duaner Sanchez and Steve Schmoll, the deal with Baltimore marks the second time this month the team ship a starter from their pitching rotation to bolster their bullpen.
