PRESS RELEASE: METS SIGN RHP LUIS GARCIA





FLUSHING, N.Y., January 21, 2026 – The New York Mets today announced they have signed RHP Luis García to a one-year contract. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Mets designated infielder Tsung-Che Cheng for assignment.

Update: Jan 28, 2026 - Washington Nationals claimed SS Tsung-Che Cheng off waivers from New York Mets. 

The 6-2, 240-pounder went 2-2 with a 3.42 ERA (21 ER/55.1 IP) in 2025 with the Dodgers, Nationals and Angels. His average fastball averaged 96.9 MPH which was in the 87th percentile in the majors and his ground-ball rate was 49.7 percent, ranking in the 82nd percentile in the majors last year according to Statcast.

 

García, 38, has pitched 13 years in the majors with the Phillies, Angels, Padres, Cardinals, Dodgers, Red Sox, Rangers and Nationals. He has compiled a 28-30 record with 17 saves and a 4.07 ERA (264 ER/583.1 IP) in 603 games.

 

He has held right-handers to a .235 (306-1300) batting average during his career.
