NY Daily News:

  • Mike Lupica: The Mets have more to prove this season than the Yankees do"And even with the long-term contract bestowed upon him by Cohen to get Stearns out of Milwaukee, Stearns has to be enough of a realist to know that he needs to produce for Cohen and soon — and that means produce a World Series — because he’s never going to have as much runway as Brian Cashman has with Hal Steinbrenner."
Newsday:
  • Sean Manaea is odd man out of Mets' rotation to begin season. "The Mets will have a five-man rotation, at least through the first two turns of the rotation, with Sean Manaea as the odd man out. Mendoza plans to use the 34-year-old lefthander in a piggyback role out of the bullpen, though it is to be determined which games he will pitch in...Thursday (Opening Day) vs. Pittsburgh: Freddy Peralta; Saturday vs. Pittsburgh: David Peterson; March 29 vs. Pittsburgh: Nolan McLean; March 30 at St. Louis: Clay Holmes; March 31 at St. Louis: Kodai Senga;

1962

In the first meeting between the two New York clubs, the Mets defeated the World Champion Yankees in a spring training game with a dramatic walk-off 4-3 victory at Al Lang Field. Casey Stengel, the former skipper of the Bronx Bombers, now the expansion team's manager, clearly wanting to beat his old club, calls upon veteran Richie Ashburn, who delivers a ninth-inning pinch-hit single for the Amazins'.

1962

Roger Maris declines to pose with Mets coach Rogers Hornsby because the veteran had criticized him in the recently published autobiography, My Wars with Baseball. In the book, the 65-year-old Hall of Famer dismisses the Yankees slugger as a mediocre hitter who couldn't bat .400 even with all of his averages added up.

Baseball Reference:

1963 - The New York Mets, who finished last in the National League with a 40-120 record in their inaugural season, purchase pitcher Carl Willey from the Milwaukee Braves. Willey will boost a pitching rotation that includes Roger CraigAl Jackson and Tracy Stallard. The Mets will improve to 51-111 this season.

1997: The New York Mets, loaded with middle infielders, add two more, acquiring shortstop Manny Alexander and third baseman Scott McClain from the Baltimore Orioles. The Mets give up hard-throwing reliever Hector Ramirez in exchange.

2015 - Yankees prospect Jose Pirela runs into the center field fence at full speed in trying to chase down a drive off the bat of the Mets' Juan Lagares. He suffers a concussion and has to be taken to hospital, but escapes more serious injury. Meanwhile, Lagares circles the bases with an inside-the-park home run.
