Syracuse, NY – A pair of early big innings by the Toledo Mud Hens proved too much to overcome, as the Syracuse Mets fell, 17-7, on Thursday night following a 55-minute rain delay at NBT Bank Stadium.
Toledo (2-4) wasted no time jumping ahead in the top of the first inning. Max Clark doubled to start the rally and, after two walks loaded the bases, Corey Julks ripped a bases-clearing double to put the Mud Hens in front, 3-0.
The Mud Hens added on in the second. After an error and a baserunner set the table, Wenceel Pérez launched a two-run home run to right field. Later in the inning, Eduardo Valencia delivered a two-run double, extending the Toledo lead to 7-0.
Syracuse (3-3) got on the board in the bottom of the third inning. Jackson Cluff singled and Nick Morabito walked before Ronny Mauricio lined an RBI double to left field, cutting the deficit to 7-1.
In the fourth, the Mets added another run. Christian Arroyo led off with a single, Vidal Bruján doubled, and Arroyo later scored on a wild pitch. Soon after, Cristian Pache grounded out, bringing Bruján home, trimming the deficit to 7-3.
Toledo responded immediately in the top of the fourth. Eduardo Valencia tripled to begin the inning and scored on a double by Gage Workman, pushing the lead to 8-3.
The Mud Hens then broke the game open in the fifth inning, scoring 7 runs to stretch the lead to 15-3.
Syracuse tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth. Nick Morabito singled and later scored on a double-play ball off the bat of Ronny Mauricio, making it 15-4.
In the sixth, the Mets added more. Jackson Cluff walked, and Hayden Senger followed with a two-run home run to left field, cutting the deficit to 15-6.
Toledo added two more runs in the top of the eighth to take a 17-6 lead. Syracuse capped the scoring in the bottom of the inning after Hayden Senger blasted his second homer of the night, bringing the final score to 17-7.
