Moosic, PA – An early offensive barrage by the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders gave the Syracuse Mets an 11-3 loss on Thursday night at PNC Field.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (22-18) struck quickly in the bottom of the first inning. After reaching on an error, George Lombard Jr. came around to score on an RBI single by Oswaldo Cabrera. A wild pitch later in the inning brought home Yanquiel Fernandez from third, giving the RailRiders a 2-0 lead.
Syracuse (21-20) answered in the second. Christian Arroyo singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Ben Rortvedt, trimming the deficit to 2-1.
The RailRiders broke the game open in the second inning. Jonathan Ornelas tripled to lead off the frame and scored on a groundout by Lombard Jr. Later, Marco Luciano launched a two-run homer, and Seth Brown followed with another two-run shot, stretching the lead to 7-1.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre added four more runs in the fourth. Cabrera hit a two-run home run before back-to-back solo homers by Ernesto Martinez Jr. and Payton Henry ballooned the advantage to 11-1.
The Mets chipped away in the fifth when Jackson Cluff scored on a Ryan Clifford fielder’s choice, making it 11-2.
In the sixth, Yonny Hernández walked and later scored on a Ben Rortvedt groundout to cap the scoring at 11-3.
On the mound, Jonah Tong started for Syracuse and allowed seven runs over one and two-thirds innings. Carlos Guzman followed and surrendered four runs in the fourth inning. Dan Hammer tossed a scoreless fifth inning, Alex Carrillo pitched his seventh consecutive scoreless outing in the sixth, and Cionel Pérez struck out three in a row to end a scoreless seventh. Third baseman Yonny Hernández was called upon to pitch the eight and faced the minimum, keeping the score 11-3.
Syracuse continues its series with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday night. Left-hander Zach Thornton is slated to start for the Mets opposite right-hander Dom Hamel for the RailRiders. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
