FLUSHING, NY, June 25, 2026 – The New York Mets have announced that they have acquired minor league INF Cole Mathis from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for LHP David Peterson.
“David grew up in the Mets system and was a true professional throughout his time here,” said President of Baseball Operations David Stearns. “He is a fearless competitor who represented the organization with class and respect. David had many incredible moments during his Mets tenure including closing out Game 3 of the 2024 Wild Card Series as well as a selection to the 2025 All-Star Game. We thank David and his family and wish them nothing but the best going forward.”
Mathis, 22, was selected by the Cubs in the second round of the 2024 First-Year Player Draft out of the College of Charleston. He was the Cubs 13th-best prospect according to MLB Pipeline.
The Columbus, GA native played first and third base and was hitting .272 (40-147) with 12 doubles, two triples, 10 homers and 39 RBI in 39 games between two levels this year.
Peterson, 30, played parts of seven seasons with the Mets. He compiled a 40-36 record with a 4.31 ERA (331 ER/690.2 IP) with 292 walks and 677 strikeouts. The left-handed pitcher appeared in 16 games (eight starts) this season and went 3-6 with a 6.09 ERA (46 ER/68.0 IP), 30 walks and 63 strikeouts. Peterson was originally selected with the 20th overall pick in the 2017 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Oregon.
