Rochester, NY – Jonah Tong delivered five scoreless innings in the nightcap as the Syracuse Mets split a doubleheader with the Rochester Red Wings on Thursday at ESL Ballpark. Rochester won the opener, 6-1, before Syracuse responded with a 2-0 victory in the second game.
Rochester (16-14, 61-42) struck for three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Seaver King led off with a double before Phillip Glasser walked. Christian Franklin followed with an RBI single, and a throwing error on the play advanced both runners. Glasser scored on a wild pitch before Andrew Pinckney’s RBI groundout made it 3-0.
The Red Wings added another run in the second when Leandro Pineda walked, advanced to third on a pickoff error and a single, then scored on Franklin’s sacrifice fly.
Rochester pushed the lead to 6-0 in the fourth. King doubled and scored on Glasser’s RBI single before Abimelec Ortiz drove home Glasser with an RBI double after Kevin Herget entered in relief.
Syracuse (13-16, 51-53) avoided the shutout in the sixth inning. Mike Tauchman doubled to lead off the frame and scored two outs later when Ji Hwan Bae lined an RBI single to center field.
Tauchman finished 3-for-3 with a double and the Mets’ lone run, while Bae drove in Syracuse’s only run.
Jack Wenninger took the loss after allowing six runs on seven hits over three and two-thirds innings. He walked four and struck out five.
Kevin Herget retired the final two outs of the fourth inning, allowing two hits while striking out one. Dylan Ross faced two batters in the fifth, and Dedniel Núñez struck out two in a perfect sixth inning.
The Mets responded in the nightcap with all of their offense in the second inning.
Christian Arroyo led off the inning by launching his eighth home run of the season to center field. Later in the frame, MJ Melendez singled, advanced to third on a groundout and a wild pitch before Jihwan Bae drove him home with an RBI single to right field, extending the lead to 2-0.
Tong held the lead, limiting Rochester to two hits over five scoreless innings while walking two and striking out seven. In the fourth inning Abimelec Ortiz doubled with no outs and Tong responded by striking out Andrew Pinckney, Trey Lipscomb and Riley Adams in order to strand Ortiz at second base. Jefry Yan relieved Tong, striking out the final three batters he faced. Ben Simon worked a scoreless seventh despite allowing a one-out double to earn his fourth save.
The Syracuse pitching staff combined to allow just three hits while striking out 10 in the shutout.
Arroyo finished 2-for-3 with a home run, while Bae drove in the Mets’ second run.
The Mets and Red Wings continue their six-game series Friday night at ESL Ballpark. Right-hander Robert Stock is scheduled to start for Syracuse against Rochester right-hander Luis Perales. First pitch is set for 6:45 p.m.
