Rochester, N.Y. – A nine-run third inning sent the Syracuse Mets to a 10-1 loss against the Rochester Red Wings on Friday night at ESL Ballpark.
Rochester (17-14, 62-42) broke open a scoreless game in the third. Phillip Glasser started the rally with a two-run double before Christian Franklin added a two-run double of his own. Abimelec Ortiz followed with a two-run homer to right-center, and after Syracuse went to the bullpen, Seaver King delivered a two-run single before Glasser capped the inning with an RBI single to give the Red Wings a 9-0 lead.
The Mets allowed nine runs on eight hits in the inning, the most runs and hits allowed in a single inning this season.
Syracuse (13-17, 51-54) managed seven hits against five Rochester pitchers and did not score until the ninth inning. The Mets left 10 men on-base and went 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position.
The Red Wings added their final run in the fifth when Riley Adams hit a solo home run to left-center field, extending the lead to 10-0.
Syracuse avoided the shutout in the ninth. Cristian Pache walked, Christian Arroyo singled, and Zack Short worked a walk to load the bases with one out. Jihwan Bae then grounded into a force out that scored Pache for the Mets’ lone run before Justin Lawrence recorded the final out.
Jack Weisenburger started for Syracuse and allowed six runs while recording six outs. Dan Hammer surrendered three more runs later in the third before Matt Seelinger, Joe Jacques, and Ofreidy Gómez combined to hold Rochester to one run over the final four innings. Gomez worked the final two innings, and induced a double play ball to get out of the eighth.
Bae finished 1-for-5 with a double, a stolen base, and Syracuse’s only RBI. Arroyo and Christopher Morel each recorded a hit, while Rortvedt reached base twice with a walk and a single.
The Mets continue their six-game series against the Red Wings on Saturday evening. Mets No. 2 Jonathan Santucci is scheduled to make his Triple-A debut opposite right-hander Brad Lord on major league rehab for the Red Wings. First pitch at ESL Ballpark is scheduled for 6:45 p.m.
