BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (16-22) won their sixth consecutive game, their longest winning streak of the season, as Jefferson Rojas tallied three hits in a 6-4 victory over the Hartford Yard Goats (15-23) on Saturday night at Mirabito Stadium.
In a 4-4 game in the bottom of the eighth inning, Binghamton took a 6-4 lead. Shortstop Mitch Voit led off the frame with a single and reached second base on a wild pitch before second baseman Émilien Pitre bunted for a hit.
Then, with runners on first and second base, third baseman Jefferson Rojas delivered the eventual two-run triple to give Binghamton a 6-4 lead. Rojas finished 3-for-4, R, 3B, 3 RBI, SB.
For the third time in this series, Binghamton took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Voit led off the inning with a walk and stole second base. Rojas drove in Voit with an RBI single, for his first RBI hit in the New York Mets organization.
Voit has scored 19 runs in his first 10 Double-A games with six stolen bases.
Hartford tied the game at 1-1 in the third inning against right-hander Gabe Davis in his New York Mets organization debut. Center fielder GJ Hill led off the inning with a bunt single and stole second base. Then, after a single from third baseman Dyan Jorge, second baseman Roc Riggio scored Hill on a fielder’s choice.
Two batters later, Hartford was not done. First baseman Jack O’Dowd scraped a home run over the right field wall for his fifth home run of the season. It gave Hartford a 3-0 lead.
Yard Goats left-hander Bryson Hammer made his Double-A debut, but allowed two runs in the fourth inning, which was his final frame. With two outs, catcher Chris Suero doubled, and designated hitter Billy Amick followed with a two-run home run to tie the game at 3-3.
Amick has four home runs with Binghamton, three in the series, and 27 on the year, which is tied for 10th in all of Minor League Baseball.
Binghamton right-hander Zach Peek handed in a scoreless fourth inning. Hartford added a run in the fifth inning off of right-hander Brendan Girton as Riggio led off the inning with a solo home run to make it 4-3 Yard Goats.
The Rumble Ponies again answered, this time behind an RBI single from first baseman Jacob Reimer in the sixth inning, scoring Rojas, who also singled.
Right-hander Bryce Conley (W, 2-5) retired nine straight batters with four strikeouts out of the bullpen for Binghamton in his first game back after being assigned to the New York Mets roster on August 2.
In the ninth inning, right-hander Douglas Orellana entered out of the bullpen for Binghamton and chalked up his third save in a perfect ninth frame with a strikeout. The Rumble Ponies look for their first six-game sweep of the season tomorrow against Hartford.
The Rumble Ponies close out a six-game series with the Hartford Yard Goats (Double-A, Colorado Rockies) on Sunday at Mirabito Stadium. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m and the game will be broadcast on MiLB.TV, News Radio 1290 AM & 92.1 FM, and on the WNBF News Radio App.
