BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (24-24) had their four-game winning streak snapped with a 7-5 loss to the Altoona Curve (19-28) on Thursday night at Mirabito Stadium.
Altoona struck first for the first time in this series with a two-run first inning against right-hander Noah Hall (L, 1-2) in his fourth Double-A start. Shortstop Keiner Delgado led off the game with a single, and two batters later third baseman Murph Gray belted a two-run home run. It was his fifth Double-A blast.
Binghamton cut the Altoona lead to 2-1 in the second inning against left-hander Nick Dombkowski (W, 1-2). Left fielder John Bay led off the frame with a single followed by a base hit from first baseman Corey Collins. With one out, right fielder JT Benson delivered a sacrifice fly to score Bay.
Dombkowski struck out seven batters over 6.0 innings and retired the final 12 batters that he faced. Altoona gave their starter some extra cushion in the third and fifth innings.
In the third inning, Delgado tallied his second hit and stole second base, and one batter later, right fielder Titus Dumitru chalked up an RBI single to make it 3-1 Curve.
Altoona took a 5-1 advantage in the fifth inning. Left fielder Jesus Castillo singled and stole second base. With one out, Dumitru tripled to bring in Castillo as Benson misplayed a line drive in right field. Gray followed with a sacrifice fly.
Hall went 6.0 innings for the second time at Double-A and allowed seven hits with five earned runs and five strikeouts.
The Rumble Ponies cut the Altoona deficit to 5-2 in the sixth inning against right-hander Jake Shirk. Shortstop Jefferson Rojas doubled and advanced to third base on a passed ball from Easton Carmichael, and designated hitter Jacob Reimer took advantage with a sacrifice fly. Reimer has 14 RBI over his first 12 games back with Binghamton.
Against right-hander Brendan Girton, Altoona went back in front 6-2 in the top of the seventh inning. Delgado reached on a fielder’s choice and stole his second base of the night and Dumitru cashed in his third RBI of the night with a single.
For the second straight inning, Binghamton scored a run to cut the Altoona lead to 6-3 after seven innings.
Collins walked, catcher Kevin Parada singled, and Benson then grounded into a fielder’s choice to Gray at third base, but Gray’s throw to first went wide, allowing Parada to advance to third. One batter later, second baseman Jamari Baylor recorded his first Double-A RBI with a groundout.
Right-hander Saul Garcia put down Altoona in order in the eighth inning, and right-hander Jaycob Deese did the same in the bottom half for Binghamton.
Garcia allowed one run in the ninth inning, and Altoona took a 7-3 lead. Second baseman Matt King singled; with one out, Delgado tallied his third hit of the night and then Dumitru pushed his RBI total to four with a sacrifice fly.
Altoona right-hander Arron Shortridge got the ball in the ninth inning, and after he walked Collins with one out, Parada belted a two-run home run. It was his fourth home run over his last nine games. Shortridge got Benson and Baylor to both pop out to end the game and hold on to a 7-5 victory.
The Rumble Ponies continue a six-game series with the Altoona Curve (Double-A, Pittsburgh Pirates) on Friday at Mirabito Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m and the game will be broadcast on MiLB.TV, News Radio 1290 AM & 92.1 FM, and on the WNBF News Radio App.
