Here are the Brooklyn Cyclone Game Notes for today's game.
LAST TIME OUT: Brooklyn let a four-run lead slip away in a 9-5 loss to Frederick on Friday night...Despite the loss, LF John Spikerman reached in all four of his plate appearances with a solo home run, two RBI, three runs scored, three steals and two walks...Still, the Keys plated seven runs in the top of the 8th inning against the Brooklyn bullpen, capped by a go-ahead three-run home run from 1B Yasmil Bucce... RHP José Chirinos was sharp in his final start of the year for Brooklyn. The Venezuela native tossed 4.2 innings of one-run ball, permitting just four hits, while walking only one and striking out seven.
25th ANNIVERSARY: The Cyclones celebrate their 25th anniversary season in 2026...Since the inaugural 2001 campaign, Brooklyn has captured three league titles...The Cyclones shared the New York-Penn League crown with the Williamsport Crosscutters in their first season before taking home the final NYPL title in 2019...Brooklyn captured its first full-season championship in 2025, going 4-0 in the postseason against Greensboro and Hub City.
HURT-ADO LOCKER: LHP Daviel Hurtado has been brilliant since joining the Cyclones...The Cuban-born starter tossed 5.2 innings, allowing just one unearned run in the South Atlantic League's most hitter-friendly ballpark in Asheville last Sunday...Hurtado had gone 13.0 innings without allowing an earned run before Hudson Valley's 1st inning run on Saturday, and he has a 3.04 ERA in five August appearances (four starts)...Since making his High-A debut on May 26, the 21-year-old is among the best arms in the South Atlantic League...Hurtado leads the SAL in ERA (2.75), batting average against (.188), WHIP (1.00), and opposing OPS (.540) since that date...He is also tied for second in double plays (8), tied for sixth in wins (5), and tied for ninth in strikeouts (70)...Hurtado also closed out the win on August 2 with 2.0 scoreless innings of relief to earn his first career save...Hurtado was named the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Month for June, collecting a 4-1 mark with a 2.03 ERA (6 ER in 26.2 IP) over five starts...He walked only four and struck out 26, while scattering 11 hits.
HAVE A DAY, HERNANDEZ!: C/1B Ronald Hernandez put together one of the premier performances of the season on Thursday against Frederick, going 5-for-5 with two homers, six RBI and a stolen base, becoming the first player in franchise history to put together such a stat line...The five hits were the most by a Brooklyn player in a single game this season...Hernandez's two homers came from opposite sides of the plate, the second time in as many weeks that a Brooklyn switch-hitter has homered twice in a game, once as a righty and once as a lefty, after UTL Yonatan HenrÃquez did so against Asheville two weeks ago...Those two joined C Jordan Abruzzo (8/31/08 vHV) as the only players in franchise history to homer from both sides of the plate in the same game...Hernandez also became the first full-season MiLB player to have 5+ H, 2+ HR, 6+ RBI, and 1+ SB in a game since 2021, joining a list of just nine players to do so in the MiLB Stat Portal Era (since 2005).
ROARIN' RAFI: RHP Rafi Vazquez has been untouchable out of Brooklyn's bullpen...The 28-year-old has logged scoreless outings in six of his last seven appearances out of the Brooklyn bullpen, holding a 2-0 record and a 1.64 ERA during that span, while holding batters to a .139 batting average...Among qualified SAL relievers since Vazquez's debut on July 19, the righty is third in ERA (3.20), fourth in strikeouts-per-nine-innings (10.53) and sixth in WHIP (1.12)...Vazquez was signed out of independent ball by the Mets on July 18.
TREY BALL: OF Trey Snyder broke out during the Cyclones' two-week road trip, and has carried that momentum back home to Brooklyn...The 20-year-old scored three runs in Thursday's win...Snyder also had two knocks on Saturday at Hudson Valley, his seventh multi-hit game in 11 games on the road trip...During the two weeks away from Coney Island, Snyder went 17-for-48 (.354/.382/.479/.861) with 10 runs, three doubles, a home run, 14 RBI and six stolen bases...Overall, the Kansas City, Mo. native has slashed .270/.328/.352/.681 with 19 runs scored, four doubles, two home runs, 24 RBI and 11 stolen bases in 31 games since his promotion to Brooklyn.
KING HENRĺ-QUEZ: INF/OF Yonatan HenrÃquez has caught fire at the plate...The switch-hitter went 3-for-4 with a two-run double and a walk on Friday at Hudson Valley, his second three-hit game of the series...HenrÃquez was named South Atlantic League Player of the Week after clobbering four home runs in last week's series in Asheville, going 9-for-25 (.360) with 10 runs scored, two doubles, 11 RBI and a stolen base...HenrÃquez's solo shot last Sunday was his ninth home run of the year, setting a new career-high...The 21-year-old has hit .288/.348/.568/.916 with 22 runs, 10 doubles, seven home runs, 28 RBI and 11 stolen bases since July 30.
THE HITS JUST KEEP ON COMIN': The Cyclones' offense has been nearly unstoppable over the past two weeks...The Cyclones put up 12 runs on 16 hits on Thursday, after scoring 16 runs on 20 hits between Wednesday and Thursday at Hudson Valley last weekend, not to mention a huge weekend before that in Asheville...Last Friday, Brooklyn scored 16 runs on 20 hits, both season highs...The following night, the Cyclones scored 15 more runs on 13 hits...Brooklyn finished the series with 12 runs on 11 hits on Sunday...The 16 runs were the most Brooklyn has scored since putting up 18 runs in Jersey Shore on August 28, 2022...The Cyclones fell just two hits shy of matching the franchise's all-time high of 22, set on July 13, 2007, vs. Tri-City, the Houston Astros' former New York-Penn League affiliate...The 43 runs are the most the Cyclones have scored in a three-game span, with the previous high being 37 on July 13-15, 2007 vs. Tri-City and State College, the Pittsburgh Pirates' former NYPL affiliate...Since August 21, Brooklyn is tied for eighth in Minor League Baseball in runs scored (92).
FIRST AID-AN: OF Aidan Smith has made an immediate impact in his first three weeks as a Cyclone...The Tulsa, Okla., native returned to the lineup on Thursday and put together a multi-hit performance...Smith homered four times in a five-game span in his first series as a Cyclone in Wilmington...The 22-year-old saw his nine-game hitting streak come to an end in the series opener with Jersey Shore two weeks ago...In 18 games with Brooklyn, Smith is 22-for-69 (.319/.429/.565/.994) with 17 runs scored, two doubles, five home runs, 10 RBI, 14 walks and eight stolen bases...Smith began the year on the Injured List for Bowling Green and did not rejoin the Hot Rods until May 19...After a slow start to the season, the new Mets farmhand has found his stride over the last month...Since July 5, Smith has slashed .290/.373/.565/.938 with 32 runs scored, five doubles, 11 home runs, 28 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 34 games..
COMEBACK 'CLONES: The Cyclones came back from four runs down in the 7th to defeat Hudson Valley on Wednesday, and rattled off five unanswered runs to capture Sunday's series finale...On Wednesday, Brooklyn scored two runs in both the 7th and 8th before unloading with a season-high seven-run inning in the 10th to win 11-5...The win was the third time this month the Cyclones came back from a four-run deficit...Brooklyn scored six runs in the 9th on August 5 to pull off a stunning come-from-behind 10-8 victory in Wilmington...With two outs in the inning, 2B-RF Yonatan HenrÃquez launched a go-ahead three-run home run to complete the comeback...On August 9 in Wilmington, the Cyclones trailed 5-1 in the 4th before scoring seven runs over the final six innings for an 8-6 victory...HenrÃquez tallied three hits and drove in a pair.
ARMS RACE: Brooklyn pitching has kicked into high gear as of late...The Cyclones held Hudson Valley to three runs or fewer in four of six contests last week...Two weeks ago, Brooklyn starters combined on 32.2 innings of one-run ball against the BlueClaws, good for a 0.28 ERA, while four of the six starters tossed at least 5.0 frames of scoreless ball...Despite allowing 12 earned runs on Thursday and Friday in Asheville, Cyclone arms have the ninth-best ERA in all of full-season MiLB at 3.67 since the start of their series in Wilmington on August 4...Furthermore, the Brooklyn bullpen has an 11-7 record with a 3.93 ERA since that date.
BALL MAGNETS: The Cyclones set a franchise record on August 21...OF John Smith III was hit by a pitch, the 108th time a Brooklyn batter was drilled by a pitch this season, the most in a single season in franchise history...The Cyclones are tied for fifth in Minor League Baseball and are second in the South Atlantic League in hit batsmen with 114...San Diego's Single-A Lake Elsinore (122) leads MiLB...OF John Bay set the Cyclones' single-season record for hit-by-pitches with 19, surpassing OF Matt Rudick (2022) and C Chris Suero's (2025) previous mark of 16... The Cyclones have had four hitters plunked in a game on four separate occasions in 2026...The single-game franchise record is six, set on May 19, 2023, at Hudson Valley...The previous record was set in 2022 when the Cyclones were plunked 107 times.
PITCHING IN: Brooklyn's pitching staff has been sharp as of late...The Cyclones' staff allowed just two earned runs over 56.0 innings in their series against Jersey Shore two weeks ago...Since May 14, Brooklyn pitchers have posted a 3.83 ERA (351 ER in 824.1 IP), the third-lowest in Minor League Baseball, behind only Texas' Single-A Hickory (3.45) and Chicago-AL's Single-A Kannapolis (3.61)...The Cyclones' bullpen has been a huge reason for that success...Since that date, Brooklyn's 3.72 ERA (176 ER in 426.0 IP) from relievers is fourth-best in MiLB, trailing only Kannapolis (3.21), Hickory (3.29) and Milwaukee's Triple-A Nashville (3.53)...In June, the Cyclones posted a 3.66 ERA (101 ER in 221.1 IP), the best mark in the South Atlantic League...Overall in 2026, the Cyclones' 4.09 ERA (507 ER in 1151.1 IP) is third-best in MiLB.
THIS DATE IN CYCLONES HISTORY: On September 5, 2009, while on his MLB rehab assignment, OF Carlos Beltrán delivered the game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth as Brooklyn defeated Lowell, 4-3.
BROOKLYN TO THE BIGS: After 14 former Cyclones made their Major League debuts in 2025, 10 alumni have accomplished the feat in 2026...RHP Dylan Ross made his big league debut on Tuesday night in Tampa, after joining the Mets late last year but never getting into a contest...Ross fired 1.0 perfect inning of relief...He joins LHP Nate Lavender, RHP Kade Morris, RHP Wilkin Ramos, OF Nick Morabito, LHP Zac Thornton, OF Carson Benge, OF A.J. Ewing, RHP Cameron Foster, and RHP Anthony Nunez, who made their debuts earlier this season...Foster and Nunez each debuted with the Baltimore Orioles in April, while Ramos and Morris debuted for the San Francisco Giants and Athletics, respectively...Last year's 14 debuts set a new single-season franchise record.
AMAZIN' STARTS HERE: According to MLB Pipeline, the Cyclones hold eight of the Mets' Top 30 prospects: SS Elian Peña (3), INF Sammy Stafura (8), OF Aiden Robbins (10), INF Cole Mathis (14), OF Aidan Smith (16), 1B/OF Randy Guzmán (22), LHP Daviel Hurtado (24), and RHP José Chirinos (27)...The Cyclones also have seven of the Mets' Top 30 farmhands per Baseball America: Peña (6), Stafura (9), Robbins (11), Smith (12), Mathis (16), Guzmán (20), Carreño (27)...Joe DeMayo lists Stafura (3), Peña (6), Guzmán (16), Mathis (17), Smith (22), Hurtado (26), and LHP Nicolas Carreño (28) among his Top 30.
