Syracuse, NY — The Syracuse Mets scored four runs in the final two innings and walked off with a 4-3 victory over the Rochester Red Wings Sunday at NBT Bank Stadium.
Rochester (37-26, 82-54) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Cayden Wallace singled and advanced to third on a throwing error by Syracuse pitcher Gary Gill Hill, allowing Trey Lipscomb to score. Riley Adams followed with a double to score Wallace and gave the Red Wings a two-run advantage.
Syracuse (34-28, 72-65) cut the deficit in half in the fourth when D’Andre Smith launched his fourth home run of the season to right field.
The Mets tied the game in the eighth. Billy Amick and Ryan Clifford drew back-to-back walks before Kevin Parada doubled to left field, scoring Amick. Vidal Bruján entered as a pinch-runner for Parada, and Smith followed with a double to score Bruján and made it a 3-3 game.
Neither team could score in the top or bottom of the eighth, sending the game to the ninth tied at three.
Rochester put two runners on with two outs in the ninth, but Syracuse escaped the inning without allowing a run.
The Mets won it in the bottom of the ninth. MJ Melendez led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Jose Ramos walked, and Billy Amick followed with a sacrifice bunt. A throwing error by Rochester pitcher Eddy Yean allowed Melendez to score the winning run, giving Syracuse the 4-3 victory.
Gill Hill made his Triple-A debut, tossed five innings with six hits, two runs, one unearned run, four strikeouts, and one walk. Cameron Weston made his Syracuse debut, striking out five of the six batters he faced. Dylan Ross allowed a homer in the eighth and Chayce McDermott picked up the win by facing one over the minimum in the ninth.
Smith ripped two hits, including his fourth home run of the season. Melendez also collected two hits, while Parada recorded the game-tying RBI double in the eighth.
With the win, Syracuse is two and a half games back of Rochester in the International League Second Half.
Syracuse hits the road for its final road trip of the season. The Mets play the St. Paul Saints on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:37 p.m. ET at CHS Field.
