Syracuse, NY — The Syracuse Mets scored six runs in the first six innings and cruised to a 9-1 victory over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs Tuesday at NBT Bank Stadium.
Syracuse (39-30, 77-67) opened the scoring in the first inning. D’Andre Smith was hit by a pitch before Jefferson Rojas singled on his first Triple-A hit, and both runners scored on Vidal Bruján’s two-run double to give the Mets an early 2-0 lead.
The Mets added two more runs in the second. Smith walked and scored on Rojas’ two-run home run, his first of the season, extending Syracuse’s lead to 4-0.
Syracuse added two more runs in the sixth. Ryan Clifford doubled before Smith launched a two-run home run, his fifth of the season, to make it 6-0.
Lehigh Valley (32-37, 67-77) scored its lone run on an Otto Kemp solo home run in the eighth inning, making it 6-1 Syracuse.
The Mets added three more runs in the eighth, as Clifford singled and Hayden Senger followed with a single before Ronny Mauricio drove in Clifford. After a walk to MJ Melendez, Bruján delivered a two-run single to push the lead to 9-1.
Syracuse pitching held Lehigh Valley to one run on three hits. Saul Garcia tossed two scoreless innings with one strikeout, while Cionel Pérez, Ben Simon and Garrett Stratton combined for five scoreless innings. Dylan Ross allowed one run in the eighth before Dan Hammer closed out the ninth.
Bruján led the Mets with three hits, including a double, and four RBI. Rojas went 2-for-5 with his two-run homer and two RBI, while Smith reached base three times, scored twice and drove in two runs with his fifth home run. Clifford finished with two hits, including a double, and scored twice.
With the win, Syracuse is 1.5 games back of Rochester and Indianapolis, who are tied at the top of the International League second half standings, with five games left.
Syracuse continues its series with Lehigh Valley on Wednesday. Left-hander Jonathan Santucci is slated to throw against right-hander Alan Rangel. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
