St. Paul, MN — The Syracuse Mets scored the final two runs of the game and defeated the St. Paul Saints 5-4 Tuesday night at CHS Field.
Syracuse (35-28, 73-65) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. D’Andre Smith drew a walk and stole second before Émilien Pitre singled him home. Pitre advanced to second on a throwing error by St. Paul third baseman Jake Rucker.
The Mets added another run in the third. Jose Ramos singled and stole second before moving to third on a groundout by Smith. Pitre followed with an RBI single to score Ramos and give Syracuse a 2-0 lead.
Syracuse extended its advantage in the fourth with back-to-back home runs. Billy Amick launched his sixth home run of the season to left-center field, and Vidal Bruján followed with his third home run of the season to right field, giving the Mets a 4-0 lead.
St. Paul (35-29, 77-61) began to chip away in the fifth. Austin Martin singled home Tristan Gray to make it 4-1.
The Saints scored twice in the sixth to cut the deficit to one. Cody Morissette grounded out to score Matt Wallner, and Tristan Gray grounded out to score Aaron Sabato, making it 4-3.
St. Paul tied the game in the eighth. Wallner doubled and scored on a double by Morissette. Tristan Gray was intentionally walked, but Hayden Senger threw him out attempting to steal second to end the inning with the score tied at four.
The Mets regained the lead in the ninth. Bruján drew a one-out walk and stole second before Jose Ramos doubled with two outs to score Bruján and put Syracuse ahead 5-4.
Weisenburger got the first two outs of the ninth inning. Matt Turner came in to face the lefty Emmanuel Rodriguez, threw one pitch, and ended the ballgame.
Xzavion Curry started for Syracuse and tossed 4.2 innings, allowing four hits and one earned run with three strikeouts and one walk. Garrett Stratton followed in his Triple-A debut with 1.1 innings, allowing one hit and two earned runs with one strikeout. Jack Weisenburger worked 2.2 innings, allowing two hits and one earned run with one walk. Turner collected his first Triple-A save.
Pitre led the Mets with two hits and one RBI, going 2-for-3 with a walk. Amick went 2-for-4 with a home run in his first game against the organization that drafted him, one RBI and one run scored, while Bruján went 1-for-3 with a home run, one RBI, one walk, one stolen base and two runs scored. Ramos collected two hits, including the go-ahead RBI double in the ninth, and Smith went 1-for-4 with a walk, stolen base and one run scored. Melendez reached base three times with one hit and two walks.
With the win, Syracuse jumps over Worcester and St. Paul in the second half standings, sitting in fourth place and 2.5 games back of Rochester.
Syracuse continues its road trip against the St. Paul Saints on Wednesday. Left-hander Jonathan Santucci is slated to start against right-hander Germán Márquez. First pitch is scheduled for 7:37 p.m. ET.
