BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (30-30) chipped away throughout the game, but fell short to the Portland Sea Dogs 7-5 on Friday night at Mirabito Stadium. New York Mets legend Darryl Strawberry was in attendance for a meet and greet, which coincided with the Ponies playing as the Southern Tier Shortcakes this weekend.
Portland (37-24) scored four runs in the first inning, highlighted by an RBI single from Chase Meidroth and two-run double from Matthew Lugo.
Down 4-0 in the second, Joe Suozzi hit a solo homer for the second-straight night and made it 4-1. The Ponies continued to chip away, adding two more runs in the fourth inning on an RBI single from Suozzi and an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Hayden Senger.
Up 4-3, Portland added to its lead with a run in the fifth and seventh innings, respectively. Binghamton clawed back with an RBI double from Wyatt Young in the eighth to cut its deficit to 6-4.
The Sea Dogs scored again in the ninth to make it 7-4. Brandon McIlwain hit his sixth homer of the season in the ninth to cut the deficit to 7-5, before Agustin Ruiz singled and Suozzi struck out to end the game.
Binghamton and Portland are tied 2-2 in the series with two more games remaining.
The Rumble Ponies will continue their series with the Sea Dogs on Saturday night. First pitch is set for 6:07 PM and pregame coverage gets underway at 5:50 PM on the WNBF Rumble Ponies Radio Network.

One of the bright spots in yesterday's @RumblePoniesBB 7-5 loss was Marcel Renteria @AliMarcel2 After having being brought on in the 1st, he did not allow any runs over 3.1 innings - 1 hit, 1 walk, 1 K, - proving him to be a capable long man in the bullpen. @Mets #mets #LGM… pic.twitter.com/wAkuuD8c0K
