Brian Joura Mets360: "A few days ago, the GR for the game against the Phillies called it the most disappointing loss of the season. In this game, Carlos Mendoza and Edwin Diaz said, “hold my beer,” and proceeded to deliver an excruciating loss, as the Mets allowed four runs in the bottom of the ninth and lost in extra innings, 10-9, in Miami Saturday afternoon."

Kiner's Korner: "Josh Bell crushed a three-run homer to center field, tying the game at 9-9 and stunning the Mets and their fans alike."

NY Post"On a day Lindor and Brandon Nimmo flip-flopped in the batting order, maybe the most notable performance came from Jeff McNeil, who delivered a rare multiple-hit game and even stole a base for the Mets. McNeil, stuck in a slump that had pushed his OPS to .614, reached base three times and went 2-for-4 with two RBIs as part of the team’s 15-hit attack. Every Mets starter had at least one hit except Lindor (0-for-5), who moved to the leadoff spot with Nimmo shifted to third."

Tim Healey Newsday: "As Edwin Diaz sat at his locker, head in hands and tears falling, Francisco Lindor walked over and rubbed his back...Fellow reliever Sean Reid-Foley, one of only two other players in a nearly empty Mets clubhouse, came from across the room to join them. He crouched down and got in real close...It was hard to know what to say or how to help, so they did what they could, letting their teammate and friend and beleaguered, emotional closer know that they had his back — figuratively and literally."

Mets take series from Rays after Tommy Pham drives in go ahead run on an infield single.  Tylor Megill with the win as the bullpen makes the 1 run lead hold over the last three.

NY Post: Mets finally win consecutive games again in series win over MLB-best Rays.

Brian Joura Mets 360: Gut Reaction: Mets 3, Rays 2 (5/18/23) "Tommy Pham has been hitting the ball hard all year with very little to show for it. Today he dribbled a ball up the third-base line, one that Statcast had at 55.6 mph, the lowest exit velocity in the game. But what it lacked in sock was made up for in importance, as it drove in the go-ahead run in a 3-2 Mets victory Wednesday afternoon at Citi Field."

Metstradamus: Sure, Baseball Makes Sense "So after getting swept by the Tigers, losing series to the Rockies and Reds, and splitting four against the Nationals, the Mets took two of three from the best team in baseball."

From the Mets 3 Rays 2 - Post Game Notes

After the Cards closed the Mets lead to 6-4 in the 8th by scoring 2, the Mets broke out with 6 runs in the 8th highlighted by Pete Alonso's 3-run homer.  Max Scherzer started but left the game with discomfort in his left side in the sixth inning.

NY Post: Mets pound Cardinals after Max Scherzer leaves with injury

Faith and Fear in Flushing: Glass Case of Emotion "Can the Mets win by seven and have that feel like an afterthought? It turns out they can — if the takeaway from the game isn’t a blast of a homer by Pete Alonso or a hustling triple by happily hale and hearty Brandon Nimmo or a host of hitting to break the second half of the evening’s entertainment wide open...Nope, the lasting image will be from the sixth, when Max Scherzer threw a slider to Albert Pujols and immediately signaled to the dugout that his night was finished — a very un-Scherzer thing to do, one that left a fanbase’s season flashing before its eyes."

From the Mets Post Game Notes:

Mets: Clinched their first winning season against the Cardinals since 2014.
  • Have won 13 games in a row following a loss.
  • Have scored 10 or more runs in a game three times this season.

his second triple of the homestand (Also 5/15 vs. SEA).

NY Post: Mets blow, then save Harvey gem in marathon win over Cards. "Harvey wasn’t around at the end but he got better, got stronger as he progressed through eight scoreless innings, working with just one run of support. But after closer Jeurys Familia blew the save, the rest of the bullpen made like Harvey and the Mets managed a 2-1 victory in 14 innings over the Cardinals at Citi Field...Cards reliever Sam Tuivailala (L,0-1) walked Campbell and Duda and gave way to closer Trevor Rosenthal, who got a forceout from Michael Cuddyer before intentionally walking Daniel Murphy to load the bases. That set up Mayberry’s first-pitch hit, which Jhonny Peralta gloved with a dive but could not get home in time.

Newsday: "The Mets, weary after 4 hours, 14 minutes, spilled out onto the field. After his first walk-off hit as a member of the Mets, Mayberry wound up in the grasp of backup catcher Anthony Recker. 'It's awesome,' said Mayberry, who was hitting .114 at the start of the night. 'I think Recker took me halfway into rightfield.'"
