Here are the Brooklyn Cyclone Game Notes for today's game.

The Brooklyn Cyclones (41-20) continue their homestand against the Asheville Tourists (27-34) — the High-A affiliate of the Houston Astros — on Saturday evening at 6 p.m. from Maimonides Park on Coney Island in Brooklyn, N.Y.

 

RHP Brendan Girton (3-1, 3.27) is expected to make the start for the Cyclones. The Tourists are projected to counter with the Astros’ No. 5 prospect per MLB Pipeline, RHP Anderson Brito (0-1, 3.83).

 

The first 2,500 fans through the games will receive a Brandon Nimmo Jersey Hoodie giveaway.

 

Live coverage on the Cyclones Radio Network, Bally Sports Live, and MiLB.tv will begin at 5:45 p.m.

 

LAST TIME OUT: The Cyclones dropped their 2nd-straight home contest on Friday, falling to Asheville, 4-3...Despite the defeat, RHP Will Watson looked strong in his Maimonides Park debut...The 2024 7th-round pick by the Mets spun 4.2 frames of scoreless ball in his second appearance at the High-A level. Watson struck out eight and permitted only two hits...Brooklyn held a 3-0 lead for the majority of the ballgame, but the Tourists put up four runs in the seventh to take a lead they would not relinquish...RHP Andrew Taylor kept the Brooklyn bats at bay over the final 5.0 innings, allowing only one base hit while striking out six and walking none...Asheville C Walker Janek delivered the decisive blow with an RBI double in that four-run 7th to put the Tourists in front.

 

THE NUMBER ONE SPOT: The Cyclones are mired in a 3-team race for the South Atlantic League First Half North Division crown...Entering play on Saturday, Brooklyn holds a 0.5-game lead on Greensboro for 1st place in the division...The Cyclones are 4.5 games up on 3rd-place Hudson Valley with 5 games remaining in the first half...Brooklyn's magic number to clinch the first half division crown is 5...Any Cyclones wins or Grasshoppers losses will decrease the number...Brooklyn does not play Hudson Valley or Greensboro for the remainder of the half...Greensboro has played one series (April 15-20 vs. Jersey Shore) against a North Division foe and will not play another until the second half (July 1-6 vs./at Aberdeen).

ALL BÁEZ ON ME: After recovering from knee surgery, INF Jesús Báez has slowly returned to form...Since the start of May, Báez leads the South Atlantic League in RBI (28), is 3rd in on-base percentage (.413), 8th in batting average (.301), 4th in OPS (.900), tied for 13th in hits (34), tied for 12th walks (20), and tied for 11th in runs scored (22)...The 20-year-old reached base safely in 17-of-23 plate appearances in the May 20-25 series against Jersey Shore and went 6-for-8 at the plate in May 23's doubleheader with 3 runs scored, a double, 2 home runs, and 7 RBI, en route to winning South Atlantic League Player of the Week honors...During the week, Báez hit .647 (11-17) with 6 runs scored, 2 home runs, and 10 RBI...The infielder led the circuit in batting average (.647), on-base percentage (.739), slugging percentage (1.059) OPS (1.798), and was tied for the league lead in RBI (10)...After OF A.J. Ewing won Player of the Week for May 13-18, it marked the first time Brooklyn hitters had won a league's Player of the Week award in consecutive weeks in franchise history...Báez also was recognized on MiLB.com's "Prospect Team of the Week" for his efforts...On May 20, the infielder tied a Cyclones' single-game franchise record, working 4 walks at Jersey Shore...The feat has been accomplished 11 times, most recently by LF Ryan Clifford on April 21, 2024, at Jersey Shore.
