Carlos Mendoza met with the Media before today's scheduled Mets game. He provided updates on Mark Vientos, Frankie Montas, Sean Manaea and Ronny Mauricio.
Question: Hi
Carlos, have you gotten any feedback from Montas on his start in AAA? Do you
anticipate that being his last one? (0:12)
Carlos Mendoza: Yeah,
so, talking to Hef, talking to Dickie Scott, obviously, you know, we haven't
seen the results, but physically he continues to say he's fine. I haven't
talked to him, I saw him from the distance today, but I'll get back with him…he's
going to get one more in AAA, and then we'll have a decision after that.
Question: As far
as his role goes, are you open to the idea that he may come back as a reliever,
or is this strictly going to be a starting pitcher for you?
Carlos Mendoza: Yeah,
we haven't made that decision yet. Like
I said, he's got one more, and then we're going to have to make a decision.
Question: Is
there a concern level, especially after how yesterday went and how he was
knocked (1:00) around a little bit?
Carlos Mendoza: I
wouldn't say concern, because physically he says he's fine, you know, and that
if there was something physically wrong, then you'd say, okay, there's some
concerns here, you know, so it's more mechanics and things like that, that, you
know, as he continues to get reps, we're hoping that, you know, we start seeing
better results, but I think he just, as far as physically and all that, he's in
a good place, so we will continue to work with him and get him back on track.
Question: Montas
had said that he was hoping to get more pitches yesterday. When you're talking
to a guy like that, how much feedback do you take from him, and how much do you
take that into consideration in his rehab?
Carlos Mendoza: He
wanted to just have more pitches yesterday. Yeah, yeah, but unfortunately we
couldn't, you know, because then you're putting him at risk, you know, ideally
we were looking at 80-85, but when he throws almost 60 pitches (1:58) in less
than two innings, like, then you're putting, and that's the tricky part here
with his rehab, you know, because we haven't been able to get to that pitch
count…So again, I think we're going to go back and help him with his mechanics
and the things that he's telling us, and we'll provide some feedback as well,
and hopefully we get him to, you know, the 75-80 pitch mark before we have to
make that decision.
Question: Just
what will you be looking for from Sean Manaea with his next rehab start?
Carlos Mendoza: Just
go out there and be himself, you know. I think where he's at in his rehab
process, I think it's just more how he's feeling afterwards, you know. He continues
to throw strikes. Yeah, I think at this point it's just more as he's increasing
that pitch count, you know, how is he going to feel the next few days…So yeah,
but he's still earlier on that process.
Question: Mark
Vientos, how is he doing, and do you know, do you have any date for rehab
assignment yet?
Carlos Mendoza: Early
next week. I'm not sure if it's Tuesday, Wednesday, but if, so he ran yesterday
up to like 90%...He's kind of a full goal as far as hitting, taking ground
balls. So, he's got two more days. He'll be indoors obviously today because of
the weather, but the goal is for him to start playing some games in AAA next
week.
What have you thought of Mauricio's last couple days?
Carlos Mendoza: He's
been on and off. You know, we saw a couple of good games in Colorado, but then
missing pitches in the strike zone and then they're making him chase. So again,
I've been saying it, we got to be patient with him, you know, missed a lot of
time…He continued to get playing time here and it's an adjustment for him and
at the big league level. So again, a couple of good games, then not so good. We'll
continue to work with him.
Just with the forecast today, have you gotten any feedback
on the weather in terms of delay postponement?
Carlos Mendoza: No,
the latest I got is they're going to make a call or not make a call, get
together at 2.30 and then we'll have a better idea. But I'm pretty confident we
get this one in.
