From The Twins 8 Mets 3 Post Game Notes - 7/31/2024

  • Luis Severino: His shortest outing of the season...He has given up seven or more hits in four out of his last six starts.
  • Mark Vientos: Hit an opposite field two-run home run in the second inning to put the Mets up 2-1.

Brian Joura Mets360: "Severino gave up a solo homer in the second for the game’s first run. After the Mets gave him the lead in the bottom of the inning, Severino gave it right back, with interest. He allowed five runs in the third inning, including another homer. And the Mets were never in it after that."

NY Post: Luis Severino roughed up by Twins as Mets fail to finish sweep "On Wednesday, manager Carlos Mendoza became concerned when he saw 93 and 94 mph readings on Severino’s fastball. He checked on his starting pitcher, who said he was fine. The trainers checked on Severino, who continued saying he was fine. His average four-seamer was down nearly 1 ¹/₂ miles per hour."

NY Post: Brandon Nimmo exits Mets game after fouling ball off foot. "Nimmo was removed from the Mets’ 8-3 loss to the Twins after fouling a ball off the top of his left foot while batting in the sixth inning. He said afterward that X-rays came back clean and that he expects to be in the lineup for the opener of a 10-game road trip Friday in Anaheim."

Year: 2022; Game#101; Sunday  Jul 31 NYM 9 @ MIA; 3; boxscore;   WP: Walker;  LP: López; Time: 3:23; DAY; Attendance: 17,449;  Record: 64-37; Standings: 1; Games up/behind: up 3.0; W;

NY Post: Mets’ offense erupts in rout of Marlins to match season-high 6 game win streak. “The Marlins never had a chance on this day. By the time the third inning was complete the Mets had already amassed 12 hits and raced to a 6-0 lead, knocking out starting pitcher Pablo Lopez in the process…[Taijuan] Walker (W,9-2) pitched 5 ²/₃ innings and allowed three earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks. The right-hander had shut out the Marlins over seven innings in his previous start against them, on July 10.”

Year: 2021; Game#104; Saturday  Jul 31 NYM 5 Vs. ;CIN; 4; boxscore; 10 innings;  WP: Diaz;  LP: Cessa; Time: 3:22; NIGHT; Attendance: 26,477;  Record: 56-48; Standings: 1; Games up/behind: up 5.0; W-wo;

NY Post: Javier Baez homers in debut as Mets rally past Redsin 10. “After Dominic Smith tied the game in the ninth inning with the Mets down to their last strike, [Brandon] Drury won it for them in the 10th on a walk-off single to complete the comeback in a 5-4 win over the Reds at Citi Field…The Mets (55-48) snapped a two-game skid on a night when Baez, acquired from the Cubs before Friday’s trade deadline, debuted with a two-run homer in the sixth inning that gave the Mets a pulse after trailing 4-1.”

Year: 2020; Game #8; Friday;  Jul 31, NYM 10 @ ATL; 11; boxscore;   WP: Dayton;  LP: Lugo;  Save: Martin; Time: 3:35; NIGHT;  Record: 3-5; Standings: 5; Games up/behind: 2; L;

Braves 11 Mets 10. Rick Porcello 4 innings, 5 hits, 4 runs, 3 ER, 3 was, 5K, 82 pitches – 48 strikes;  Paul Sewald 1 inning, 2 hits, 1 run, 1 ER; Chasen Shreve, 2 innings, 1 hit, 1 run, 1 BB, 5 Ks; Dellin Betances 1/3 inning, 2 hits, 4 runs, 2 BB, 4 K; Seth Lugo (L 1-1, BS 2) 2/3 inning, 1 hit, 1 BB, 1 K; Robinson Cano 3 for 4 (HR), 1 BB, 2 RBIs, run scored;  Brandon Nimmo 2 for 5, HR, 2 runs scored, 2 Ks; J.D. Davis, 2 for 4 (HR), 3 RBIs, 1 run scored; Andres Gimenez 2 for 4, 1 run scored.

SNY.TV: “Up by four going into the eighth, the Mets handed the ball to Dellin Betances, who had an adventure of an inning. Betances allowed four earned runs in just one-third of an inning, walking two and uncorking a wild pitch. Seth Lugo was then called on to try clean things up with two inherited runners on, but Lugo walked Marcell Ozuna and then allowed a three-run double by Travis d’Arnaud, giving the Braves an 11-10 lead after trailing 8-2 earlier in the game.”

NY Post: Mets blow six-run lead as bullpen implodes for ‘toughest’ loss yet

Metstradamus: d'Arnaud Is French For "We Suck".

NY Post: Rick Porcello sees progress as his Mets struggles continue. “I made it past the second [inning], so that was a positive,” he said.

Elite Sports NY: New York Mets: Friday’s bullpen implosion isn’t on Luis Rojas. “On Friday night, there’s no way anyone can lay the blame at Rojas’s feet. He made the right calls, but the pitching simply wasn’t good enough. The crushing blow came when the team’s best reliever—and right now, best pitcher not named Jacob deGrom—lost focus in a key spot. Of course, there was plenty that led up to that point, but Seth Lugo‘s blown save was the gut punch that Mets fans have become so used to over the years.”

NY Post: Unbelievable! Flores dries tears for walk-off HR in thriller. “Flores cleared the left-field fence on Felipe Rivero’s third pitch of the 12th inning, allowing the Mets to celebrate a 2-1 victory over the Nationals at Citi Field, culminating a day in which the club acquired slugger Yoenis Cespedes from the Tigers.”

ESPN.com: Two nights after thinking he was traded, Wilmer Flores puts Mets by Nats. “Just a few minutes before the 4 p.m. trade deadline, the Mets gave their meager offense a major boost by obtaining slugger Yoenis Cespedes from Detroit for two minor league pitchers…Hours later, Flores drove in both Mets runs and made a spectacular defensive play at second base to back Matt Harvey…’I'm sitting here looking at some guys who are outstanding writers. Outstanding. You couldn't write that. You guys couldn't come up with that. And you're good. That's unbelievable,’ Mets Manager Terry Collins said.”
