From the Marlins 3 Mets 2 Post Game Notes - 8/18/2024:

  • Brandon Nimmo: Launched a solo home run in the sixth inning to give the Mets a 2-1 lead.
  • Francisco Lindor: Blooped a single to center field to tie the game at 1-1...This extended Lindor’s hitting streak to a season-long 12 games...Is hitting .358 (19-53) over that span with six extra base hits.
  • Paul Blackburn: Has pitched 6.0 innings in three of his four starts since joining the Mets...Has a 1.83 (11 ER/36.0 IP) in six home starts this season.

Tim Healey Newsday: "Brandon Nimmo injured his right shoulder and will get an MRI on Monday. The bullpen blew another late lead. The lineup failed to capitalize on several scoring chances, including a two-on, none-out situation in the bottom of the ninth. Jeff McNeil struck out after trying to bunt during that sequence. The Mets suffered from being on the wrong end of two standout plays in centerfield and two close plays at the plate."

Brian Joura Mets360: "The Mets had two on and nobody out in the bottom of the ninth inning but couldn’t push across the tying run, as they lost to the Marlins, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at Citi Field. The loss kept them from a series sweep and left their record against their NL East foe for the year at 7-6."

Mike Puma NY Post:  "Vientos got thrown out at the plate to end the first after tagging up from second base on Pete Alonso’s long drive to center field. On the play, Hill — who hit the fence and fell — flipped the ball to right fielder Jesus Sanchez, who fired to the cutoff. Vientos had easily reached third and received the green light from coach Mike Sarbaugh, but was tagged out at the plate following a strong throw for a unique 8-9-4-2 double play."

  • Francisco Lindor scored his team-leading 77th and 78th run of the season.

Tim Healey Newsday: Joey Lucchesi sharp, Jeff McNeil and Brandon Nimmo homer as Mets beat Cardinals. “The Mets got to Zack Thompson for two runs in five innings. Brandon Nimmo led off the game with his 18th home run, setting a new career high. Jeff McNeil’s three-run long ball in the seventh highlighted a five-run rally that blew the game open.”

NY Post: Lucchesi followed lefty Jose Quintana’s superb start from Thursday by firing 5 ²/₃ scoreless innings, in which he allowed four hits and two walks and struck out five. Lucchesi hadn’t pitched for the Mets since May 13 and his previous two outings were rehab appearances with Single-A Brooklyn because of left knee tendinitis.

ESPN.com: "Fried outpitched deGrom, ever so slightly, in a matchup of aces and rookie Michael Harris II bounced a go-ahead double in the seventh inning that sent Atlanta over New York 3-2 on Thursday night."

NY Post: "Seth Lugo replaced Jacob deGrom with two outs in the seventh inning and allowed a ground-ball double to Michael Harris II that scored Vaughn Grissom from first base with the go-ahead run. Grissom was running on the pitch and never stopped, beating first baseman Darin Ruf’s relay throw to the plate after Nimmo, playing deep in center field, retrieved the grounder just to the right of second base."

NY Post: "Hours after the team owner wondered on Twitter about his “unproductive” hitters, the Mets took a collective belly flop off the Bay Bridge for most of the afternoon before showing late life to beat the Giants 6-2 in 12 innings at Oracle Park. Kevin Pillar smashed a three-run homer in the 12th against Tyler Chatwood, the Giants’ ninth pitcher of the day, helping the Mets snap a five-game losing streak and move to .500 as they head to Los Angeles.."

Mets 8 Marlins 3. Corey Oswalt  4.1 innings, 5 hits, 2 runs, 2 ER, 0 walks, 4K, 74 pitches – 44 strikes;  Justin Wilson (W, 1-1), 1.1 innings, 0 runs, 1 hit, 0 walks, 1 Ks; Jared Hughes, 1.1 innings, 1 hit, 0 runs, 0 walks, 1 K; Dellin Betances 1 inning, 1 hit, 0 runs, 0 BB; Edwin Diaz 1 inning, 3 hits, 1 earned run, 3 Ks; Amed Rosario, 2 for 5 (HR) with a run scored, 3 RBIs; Brandon Nimmo 3 for 5, HR, 1 run scored, 2 RBIs; J.D. Davis, 1 for 3, HR, 1 RBI, 1 run scored, 2 walks; Dominic Smith 1 for 3, 1 walk, 2 RBIs; Robinson Cano 1 for 5), run scored

Brian Joura Mets360.com: Corey Oswalt was called up from the alternate site to replace David Peterson, who hit the IL with shoulder trouble. Oswalt did better than the other replacement starters here lately, as he went 4.1 IP and allowed just two runs. He also had four whiffs and didn’t allow a walk.

Deesha Thosar NY Daily News: Mets offense clicks on all cylinders as Corey Oswalt limits the damage vs. Marlins.  “If Tuesday night was a test for Corey Oswalt to continue starting for the Mets, he just may have passed…The right-hander went 4.1 innings and allowed two earned runs on five hits with no walks and four strikeouts in the Mets’ 8-3 win over the Marlins. Tuesday night was the most encouraging outing the Amazin’s had seen from Oswalt this year.”

Metstradamus Welcome To The Party, Amed: With the lead at a fragile 3-2, Rosario crushed a ball into what might have been the Clevelander had Derek Jeter just left well enough alone to make it 4-2. Then after a Dom Smith bases loaded walk in the 8th to make it 5-2, Rosario blew it open with a two run single to make it 7-2, and provide the needed comfort for an 8-3 victory.”

NY Post: "The Mets refused to quit. Trailing 8-4 in the sixth, they scored three runs against the Giants bullpen to make it a game. Ty Kelly smashed a two-run triple before pinch-hitter Rene Rivera’s RBI fielder’s choice pulled the Mets within a run. Travis d’Arnaud and Justin Ruggiano singled in succession to begin the rally...Kelly had a chance to become the hero when he came to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs in the eighth with the Mets down a run, but was retired by reliever Sergio Romo, the Giants’ sixth pitcher."
