Brian Joura Mets360: Pete Alonso gave the Mets the early lead with a 439-foot homer. Francisco Lindor tied it with his 28th HR of the year, staying one behind Alonso for the team lead. The Mets took the lead in the ninth inning. Jesse Winker hit a one-out double and pinch-runner Tyrone Taylor advanced to third on a fly out to right. Jose Iglesias drove home the game-winner with a smash up the middle.
Tim Healey Newsday: "Jose Iglesias eked a go-ahead single up the middle in the ninth inning of a 3-2 win over the Diamondbacks on Thursday afternoon, awarding the Mets a series victory to conclude this tough stretch of schedule."
Abbey Mastracco NY Daily News: "One night after blowing a save and costing the Mets a win, Edwin Diaz came through in the bottom of the ninth, retiring the Diamondbacks in order to secure a 3-2 victory for the Mets on Thursday afternoon at Chase Field. The Mets (70-64) won the series, 2-1, to stay alive in the NL Wild Card race."
Mike Puma NY Post: "Peterson had a sixth straight sharp outing, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts over seven innings. Over his last six starts, the left-hander has pitched to a 1.86 ERA. The last time he allowed more than two earned runs was July 28 against the Braves."

Mets beat the Nationals but all anyone talked about was how the Mets players gave the fans the thumbs down.
NY Post: Frustrated Mets are giving their fans the ‘thumbs-down’. "Baez, Francisco Lindor and Kevin Pillar were among the players who turned thumbs down after delivering hits in the Mets’ 9-4 victory over the Nationals. Asked about the thumbs down, Baez said it was related to the boos Mets players have received. The Mets are 8-19 in August, a stretch in which they have fallen from first in the NL East to trailing the Braves by 7 ½ games."
NY Post: Jonathan Villar powers Mets to second straight victory. "Villar’s two-run homer in the sixth, which followed a triple the previous inning, were two of the loudest hits in the Mets’ 9-4 victory over the Nationals at Citi Field. A day after the Mets slugged three homers, Villar was joined by Javier Baez in going deep to lead an 11-hit attack.

Tim Healey Newsday: "The Mets lost to the Yankees, 2-1, on Saturday when Betances’ walk-off wild pitch allowed Clint Frazier to scoot home from third. Thirteen appearances and a month-plus into his first season in Queens, Betances has a 6.10 ERA and sharply diminished fastball velocity."
Anthony DiComo Mets.com: "After Ramos tied Saturday’s game with an eighth-inning homer off Adam Ottavino, the Mets asked Betances to throw a scoreless ninth to send the game to extra innings. Instead, the former Yankee walked Frazier to open the inning, then allowed a two-strike single to Jordy Mercer with one out. At that point, manager Luis Rojas came to the mound for a chat with both Betances and his infielders, telling them to look for an inning-ending double-play ball with runners on the corners. But when Kratz squared to bunt, Betances uncorked a wild pitch to end the game."

NY Post: Yoenis Cespedes puts Mets on his back with dramatic walk-off. "One day after watching the Mets’ three-game winning streak end while sitting out with a quad injury, Cespedes returned to the field Monday night and again demonstrated his singular dominance with a two-out, walk-off home run in the 10th inning to give the Mets a much-needed 2-1 win over the Marlins at Citi Field. Cespedes’ second career walk-off blast — and first with the Mets — came in the opening game of a massively important four-game series, leveling the teams in their chase of the Cardinals for the National League’s second wild-card spot."
ESPN.com: "Rafael Montero went five innings and worked around a career-high six walks -- most by a Mets starter since May 2014. The right-hander yielded only two hits while subbing for Jacob deGrom, skipped in the rotation to rest and regroup following two poor outings in a row...Rookie left-hander Josh Smoker (1-0) struck out two in a perfect inning against the meat of Miami's struggling lineup for his first major league win. Smoker, who pitched for the third straight day and fourth in the past five, was all fired up coming off the mound."

NY Post: Mets waste deGrom rebound as bats get squashed again. "So after pulverizing virtually all pitchers during a seven-game winning streak, the Mets offense turned meek and mild for a second straight losing game, mustering five hits. Boston’s Joe Kelly threw a wet blanket over the Mets bats and pitched the Red Sox to a 3-1 victory before a Citi Field sellout crowd of 43,255 that has the Mets 5 ¹/₂ games up on the Nationals in the NL East."
ESPN.com: "Mookie Betts homered and scored twice as the last-place Red Sox won for the eighth time in 11 games. They have taken the first two this weekend at Citi Field after the NL East-leading Mets returned from an 8-1 road trip."

Baseball Reference: It's a rare good day for the Mets, who sweep the Marlins in a doubleheader at Citi Field, 2 - 1 and 5 - 1. R.A. Dickey pitches 7 scoreless innings to win the opener, and Dillon Gee follows by allowing only 1 run in 6 innings in the nitecap to improve to 12-5 on the year. Jose Reyes returns to the line-up in the second game and drives in a run, after missing three weeks to a hamstring injury. The Mets had been swept in their previous two doubleheaders this year.

National Pastime.com: "Giants center fielder Willie Mays breaks Ralph Kiner's record for home runs in a month when the 'Say Hey Kid' hits a moon shot off Jack Fischer for his 17th round-tripper in an 8-3 victory over New York. The former Pirates outfielder, now a broadcaster for the Mets on WHN radio and WOR-TV, calls the four-bagger which breaks the monthly mark he established with 16 round-trippers in 1949 during September."
Willie's 3-run homer was part of a 5 run 3rd that gave the Giants the lead. Jack Fisher (L,8-17) allowed all 5 of the runs. Ed Kranepool went 2 for 5 with an RBI, a double and Joe Cristopher 2 for 4, double, 1 run , RBI led the Mets offense.
