Year: 2024; Game #130; Saturday, Aug 24; NYM 7 @ SDP 1;  boxscore; WP: Peterson;  LP: King;  Time: 2:25; Night; Attendance: 42,284; Record: 68-62; Standings: 3; Games up/behind: 7.5;W;

Francisco Lindor#: SS 2 for 5; 2 HRs, 2 runs; 5 RBIs; Mark Vientos: 3B 0 for 4; 1 run; 1 walk; 3 Ks; Brandon Nimmo*: CF-LF 0 for 3; 1 walk; 1 K; Pete Alonso: 1B 1 for 4; double; 1 RBI; 3 Ks; J.D. Martinez: DH 0 for 4; 3 Ks; Jesse Winkler: LF 0 for 1; 1 walk; Harrison Bader: PH-CF 1 for 2; HR; 1 run; 1 RBI; Starling Marte: RF 1 for 4; 1 run; 1 K; Tyrone Taylor: RF 0 for 0; Francisco Alvarez: C 0 for 4; 1 run; Jeff McNeil*: 2B 0 for 3; 1 run; David Peterson*: (W, 8-1) 7.1 innings; 1 run; 1 ER; 5 hits; 2 walks; 2 Ks; Dedniel Núñez:  1.2 innings; no runs; 1 hit; 3 Ks;

Mike Puma NY Post: Francisco Lindor’s two-homer night propels Mets to key win over Padres. "Francisco Lindor’s best season for the Mets is only improving, at a time the team needs him most...Saturday night he slugged two home runs, including a grand slam, in leading a 7-1 rebound victory over the Padres at Petco Park."

Tim Healey Newsday: Francisco Lindor homers twice, gets 'M-V-P!' chants in Mets' win over Padres. "With 27 homers, Lindor is tied with Pete Alonso for most on the team. He also leads the Mets with 78 RBIs. Combine those with a .269 average, an .831 OPS and high-level defense at an up-the-middle-position and you have one of the best seasons in the majors this year — and, at minimum, Lindor’s best season since he joined the Mets in 2021."

Brian Joura Mets360: "It was another case of Peterson being the anti-deGrom, the pitcher on the mound who receives a bunch of offensive support. But it’s not like he needed it in this case. When you allow just 1 ER in 7.1 IP, you’re doing all right. The win upped Peterson’s record to 8-1 and lowered his ERA to 2.85."

NY Post: Giants blank Mets to spoil Francisco Lindor’s return. "The Mets (61-64) lost for the ninth time in their past 11 games, all of them coming against the top two teams in the NL West. The Giants (81-44), who own the best record in baseball, took two of three from the Mets last week in San Francisco before the Mets dropped three of four against the Dodgers in Los Angeles. They remained 6 ½ games back of the Braves for first place in the NL East."

Anthony DiComo Mets.com: "Over his first seven starts, he was dynamic. But as his innings have piled up, Megill has begun to struggle, allowing seven more runs Tuesday in the Mets’ 8-0 loss to the Giants at Citi Field. Since posting a 2.04 ERA over his first seven outings, Megill has produced a 7.03 mark in his last five."

National Pastime.com: In a 16-7 victory over the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park, the Mets set franchise marks with eight home runs and 14 extra-base hits, including David Wright's second-inning blast in his first plate appearance since going on the DL in April due to a bad back. Wilmer Flores (2), Yoenis Cespedes, Juan Lagares, Travis d'Arnaud, Daniel Murphy and Michael Cuddyer also contribute to the team's new round-tripper record.

NY Post: Mets blast way into record books with head-turning homer barrage. "It figured there needed to be something special — really special — to overshadow both David Wright hitting a home run in his first at-bat since April 14 and the shortest outing of Jacob deGrom’s big-league career. So, are franchise records of eight home runs and 15 extra-base hits special enough?"

NY Post: David Wright crushes upper-deck homer in 1st at-bat since April. "Wright was back for the Mets, playing his first game since April 14. Leading off the second inning, he looked like he never left as he crushed the third pitch he saw, hammering a mammoth homer on his first swing into the second deck in left, sparking the Mets’ eight-homer, 16-7 romp over the Phillies on Monday."

National Pastime.com: For the first time in history, the All-Star Game starters face each other in the same regular season when Mets right-hander Matt Harvey and the Tigers' Max Scherzer are opposing pitchers in Detroit's 3-0 victory over the Amazins' at Citi Field, the site of this year's Midsummer Classic. The historic matchup ends with the New York starter, who gives up 13 hits in 6.2 innings, going on the DL for season-ending surgery, and his opponent becoming just the third pitcher to start a season with a 19-1 record, joining Rube Marquard (1912 Giants) and Roger Clemens (2001 Yankees).

NY Post: Amazin' Victory, Timo HR snaps 12-game skid. "For 26 outs last night, the Mets looked particularly hexed and vexed because their losing streak was about to reach an unlucky 13 games. But with one swing of the bat, Timo Perez put an end to one of the longest skids in franchise history. Perez smashed a two-run homer with Joe McEwing on first and two outs in the ninth to erase a 2-1 deficit, milking the moment for all it was worth."

Baseball Reference: In the second game of a doubleheader sweep, Giant hurler Ed Halicki no-hits the Mets, 6 - 0. The 6'7" righthander strikes out 10 Mets to improve his record to 8-10. Craig Swan takes the loss. Controversy arises when Rusty Staub hits a ball off Halicki's leg, which caroms to the 2B Derrel Thomas, who picks it up then drops it. Official scorer Joe Sargis rules it an E-4. New York columnist Dick Young, watching the game on TV, writes that it should be a hit and accuses Sargis of subscribing to the theory that the first hit off a starter should be a "good one." The no-hitter stands but UPI's Sargis loses his job as a sometime scorer.
