Brian Joura Mets360: "The back end of the Mets’ bullpen has been so good for so long. But two of their best relievers gave up homers late, turning a 2-0 lead into a 3-2 loss Sunday afternoon in San Diego. The loss means the Mets split the four-game series with the Padres. But, should the two teams tie, the Mets hold the tie breaker, having won five of the seven games between the two clubs."

NY Post: Mets settle for disappointing split with Padres as Edwin Diaz, bullpen falter in crushing loss "Jose Quintana was at his best, and the Mets needed it. The left-hander delivered 6 ¹/₃ shutout innings in which he allowed four hits and two walks."

On Japanese Heritage night, Shohei Ohtani goes 1 for 2 with 3 walks and a run scored.  Kodai Senga (L,10-7) allows just 2 runs but the Mets only score 1 run on Francisco Lindor's homer.

NY Post: Mets bizarrely lose track of outs in sixth inning against Angels. "During the top of the sixth inning...Kodai Senga started the frame by inducing a flyout from Luis Rengifo before issuing a walk to Logan O’Hoppe. With one out, Senga got Hunter Renfroe to ground to third baseman Jonathan Arauz, who flipped to second for one out before Danny Mendick flipped it over to Pete Alonso to first base for an inning-ending double play...It took about 10 seconds or so before the Mets were clued in and started walking off the field."

From the Angels 3 Mets 1 Post Game Notes

  • Francisco Lindor (1-4, HR, RBI, R): Put the Mets on the board with a solo home run in the third, extending his hitting streak to 11 games.

  • Pete Alonso (2-4, HR, 2 RBI, R): Launched a two-run homer in the second.

Year: 2021; Game#127; Wednesday  Aug 25 NYM 2 Vs. SFG; 3; boxscore;  WP: Watson; LP: Walker;  Save: McGee; Time: 2:52; NIGHT; Attendance: 24,384;  Record: 62-65; Standings: 3; Games up/behind: 6; L;

Brandon Nimmo CF 1 for 3, 2 walks; Pete Alonso 1B 1 for 5; Jeff McNeil 2B 0 for 3, 1 K; Michael Conforto RF 1 for 3, 1 run scored, 1 walk, 1 K; Javier Baez SS 1 for 4; Dominic Smith LF 2 for 4, 1 RBI; Jonathan Villar 3B 2 for 3, 1 run scored, 1 walk; Patrick Mazeika C 0 for 3; Taijuan Walker P (L, 7-9) 2 for 2 – 6 innings, 3 runs – 2 earned; 2 hits, 1 HR, 1 walk, 3 Ks; Aaron Loup (BS, 3) 1 inning, 1 hit, 1 K;

NY Post: Pitching change backfires as sinking Mets blow late lead to Giants. "Taijuan Walker cruised into the seventh inning Wednesday for the Mets, protecting a one-run lead, with a low pitch count and only one hit and one run charged to his name. An error and a bloop single later, Walker’s night was over. The decision immediately backfired and dealt the Mets their latest blow. Manager Luis Rojas called on lefty Aaron Loup to face Brandon Crawford, a left-handed hitter. Crawford drilled Loup’s first pitch for a two-run double that lifted the Giants to a 3-2 win at Citi Field."

Year: 2020; Game #27; Tuesday;  Aug 25 (1), NYM 0  Vs. MIA; 4; boxscore;  WP: Bleier; LP: Porcello; Time: 2:37; NIGHT;  Record: 12-15; Standings: 4; Games up/behind: 4; L;

Rick Porcello (L, 1-4) 3 innings, 5 hits, 4 runs, 4 ER, 0 walks, 4 Ks, 64 pitches – 38 strikes; Corey Oswalt 4 innings, 1 hit, 0 runs, 1 walks, 3 Ks, 59 pitches – 36 strikes;  Michael Conforto 2 for 4; J.D. Davis, 2 for 4; Pete Alonso 0 for 3, 1 walk; Amed Rosario, 0 for 3; Robinson Cano 0 for 4.

NY Post: "Rick Porcello gave up four runs in a three-inning start that was cut short by the rain. He didn’t get any support from his offense as the Mets left 11 men on base and went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position. They had at least one base runner in each of the seven innings but failed to do anything with all the traffic."

Year: 2020; Game #28; Tuesday;  Aug 25 (2), NYM 0  Vs. MIA; 3; boxscore;  WP: Smith; LP: Hughes;  Save: Vincent; Time: 2:24; NIGHT;  Record: 12-16; Standings: 4; Games up/behind: 4; L;

Seth Lugo 3 innings, 9 up and 9 down, 0 Hits, 0 runs, 5 Ks, 39 pitches – 25 strikes; Jared Hughes (L, 0-1) 2/3 inning, 2 hits, 2 runs, 2 ER, 1 walk; Chasen Shreve 1.1 innings, 0 Hits, 0 walks, 1 K;  Jeurys Familia 1 inning, 1 run, 1 earned run, 0 hits, 1 walk;  J.D. Davis, 1 for 3, 1 walk;  Michael Conforto 0 for 3; Dominic Smith 1 for 1, 2 walksBrandon Nimmo 0 for 3;  Luis Guillorme 0 for 2, 1 walk; Pete Alonso 0 for 3; Amed Rosario, 1 for 2; Robinson Cano PH 1 for 1.

NY Post: "Seth Lugo was impressive in the nightcap, throwing three perfect innings with five strikeouts in his first start in two years as he began to break into the rotation. But things unraveled after he left, with the Marlins pouncing and the Mets remaining stagnant as they went on to lose Game 2, 3-0."

NY Post: "After Jon Berti led off the bottom of the sixth inning of Game 2 with a walk, the Marlins outfielder stole second, stole third and then finished off his trip around the bases by stealing home after catcher Ali Sanchez had thrown the ball back to pitcher Jeurys Familia. Berti stumbled on his way home, but it didn’t even matter, as Sanchez couldn’t handle Familia’s throw back to him and Berti crossed the plate standing up to add an insurance run in the Marlins 3-0 win at Citi Field."

ESPN.com: Mets top Phillies for fifth straight win. "Noah Syndergaard finally got a win on the road on an evening when things got testy in Philadelphia...Syndergaard (8-6) entered 0-5 with a 5.05 ERA in nine starts away from Citi Field while 7-1 with a 1.82 at home. He did just enough to earn his first road victory of the season...Yoenis Cespedes homered for the Mets, who have won 17 of their last 23 to remain 5 1/2 games up on the Nationals in the NL East."

NY Post: "Syndergaard, in another mediocre road start, lasted only five innings and allowed four runs, two of which were unearned, on four hits and two walks with nine strikeouts. The right-hander entered with a 5.05 ERA on the road. At home he has pitched to a 1.82 ERA. Michael Cuddyer’s pinch-hit, two-run single in the sixth against Jeanmar Gomez gave the Mets a 6-4 lead. Gomez got ahead 0-2 in the count, but left a fastball over the plate that Cuddyer served to center for two runs."

NY Daily News: Mets beat Phillies, two teams have shouting match over quick-pitch controversy. "A spat over a percieved quick pitch from Mets reliever Hansel Robles turned into a anti-Murphy tirade from Bowa that upped the intensity of the Mets’ 6-5 win and perhaps the final two games of this series. After Bowa was done yelling about a pitch Robles delivered while Phillies batter Darin Ruf was still getting into the box, the one-time Met then went after Murphy, clearly upset over his bat flip following a homer in Monday night’s Mets rout. In a video of the scrum, Bowa apparently says, “hey you Murphy, that bulls— flipping the bat, you’re gonna get hit, too. You. F— you. F— you.”
