Mets Calendar Classics - Mets Post Season Games Played On This Date: October 25th

"Gets by Buckner..."  Mets win Game 6 of the '86 World Series with a 3-run 2-out comeback in the 10th and Derek Jeter does in the Mets as Yanks go up 3 games to 1 in the 2000 Subway Series.

Derek homers on the first pitch of the ball game off Bobby Jones. Paul O'Neil tripled in the 2nd and scored on a Scott Brosius Sac Fly to make it 2-0.  In the 3rd, Jeter was at it again - this time with a triple.  He scored on Luis Soto's groundout.  Mike Piazza homered in the bottom of the 3rd to bring the Mets within a run but that that was all either team would score as the Mets fell 3-2.

With two out in the 5th, Joe Torre didn't allow Danny Naegle to face Piazza again.  David Cone came in and got Piazza to popup to end the inning.  Yankees' Jeff Nelson, Mike Stanton and Mariano Rivera shut the Mets out the rest of the way allowing just 2 hits, both singles, and 1 walk.

National Pastime.com: Mike Piazza becomes the first player to hit a World Series home run at Yankee Stadium and Shea Stadium. The backstop's third-inning homer off Denny Neagle will account for the only two runs the Mets will score in a 3-2 Game 4 defeat to their crosstown rivals.

With their back against the wall, the Mets stage one of the greatest comebacks in World Series history as they score 3 in the 10th with two out.

It was Boobie Ojeda Vs Roger Clemens as the Red Sox scored single runs in the 1st and 2nd to go up 2-0.  Even though Clemens was sailing through the first three innings striking out 2 in each inning, the Mets were getting his pitch count up.  Finally in the 5th, after Darryl Strawberry walked and stole 2nd, Ray Knight singled to make it 2-1.  After Mookie Wilson singled and sent Knight to 3rd, Danny Heep hit into a double play scoring Knight to tie it.  Clemens would come out after 7 innings, 134 pitches.

Knight's error in the 7th on a Jim Rice groundball that allowed Marty Barrett to take 3rd base, proved costly as Barrett later scored on a groundout to make it 3-2 Sox.  Gary Carter's bases loaded sac fly in the 8th tied it.  Mets put two men on in the 9 with no out but didn't score sending the game to extras

Dave Henderson homered to lead off the 10th and Marty Barrett singled in Wade Boggs to give Boston a 5-3 lead as they needed just 3 outs to be World Champs. Calvin Schiraldi got the first two as Wally Backman and Keith Hernandez flew out.

Gary Carter who wrote in his book "The Dream Season" was determined to not make the last out of the Series - in fact Howard Johnson tells the story that as the inning started, he went up and down the bench saying to each hitter ":I'm not making the last out of the Series" and had them say it back to them.  Carter hit a hard single to left to give the Mets hope.

Kevin Mitchell singled to put men on 1st and 2nd.  Ray Knight singled to bring in Carter with Mitchell - running on contact with 2 outs, heading to 3rd.  Bob Stanley replaced Schiraldi as Mookie Wilson came to the plate.  On the 7th pitch of the at-bat, Stanley tied to go inside but instead it rolled to the backstop and Mitchell came home with the tying run.

On the 10th pitch of the at-bat, Mookie hit a little nubber down the 1st base line...

National Pastime.com: "If one picture is worth a thousand words, you have seen about a million words, but more than that, you have seen an absolutely bizarre finish to Game 6 of the 1986 World Series." - Vin Scully, describing the aftermath of the play after a long silence.  One strike from defeat, the Mets tie the game on a wild pitch and then, thanks to Bill Buckner's error on a Mookie Wilson grounder, win Game 6, knotting the World Series at three games apiece. The hobbled first baseman, who graciously handles the fall out from one of the most memorable moments in baseball history, becomes the scapegoat for the frustrated Fenway Faithful, who wrongly believed his play alone was responsible for Boston demise in the Fall Classic.

Carter ties it in the 6th:
