Game 1 of the 2006 NLDS will be known for a Mets win, John Maine making the Mets second Rookie start in the post season after Orlando Hernandez injured his right calf and a double play at home plate.
NY Post: "With no outs in the second inning, Jeff Kent and JD Drew singled. Russell Martin then drilled a single to right field that hit the base of the wall...The ball ricocheted off the wall right to Shawn Green, who turned and hit cutoff man Jose Valentin...Kent rounded third with Drew on his heels. Valentin’s throw to catcher Paul Lo Duca got there before Kent and he was tagged for the first out. It left the catcher with his back to the plate, and he did not see Drew coming toward him until pitcher John Maine, who was standing behind home, shouted to him. Lo Duca spun in time to tag out Drew and register the strange double play."
Carlos Delgado homered in the 4th to tie the game at 1 and two batters later Cliff Floyd homered to put the Mets up 2-1. David Wright doubled in 2 in the 6th to make it 4-1 Mets. After L.A. scored 3 off Guillermo Mota in the 7th to tie it, the Mets took the lead right back on an Carlos Delgado RBI single and a David Wright RBI double. After giving up a run in the 9th, Billy Wagner struck out Nomar Garciaparra with the tying run on 2nd to end it.

NY Post: Mets spend another day in Pac Bell Hell - Hampton Hammered, Big Bats go silent in opening loss to S.F. "While Ellis Burks stepped up with his three-run, third-inning bomb and Barry Bonds notched two hits, including an RBI triple, the Mets batters looked as if they were back in their September slumber against Livan Hernandez. Hernandez left after 7 2/3 innings to a standing ovation, but he also left with the bases loaded. No problem for the Giants. Felix Rodriguez...came in with the tying run at the plate and struck out Darryl Hamilton swinging on a 1-2 fastball."

Mets with the 1999 Wild Card Tie Breaker against the Reds as Edgardo Alfonzo and Rickey Henderson homer and Al Leiter throws a complete game 2 hit shutout.
NY Post: Al-Elujah! Leiter's a Latter-Day Kooz."Leiter is indeed the Jerry Koosman of his generation. From out of a season even he termed “mediocre” an already considerable reputation as a big-game pitcher grew and grew and grew...This was his best big-game performance. Jeffrey Hammonds lined a sharp single to left in the second and Pokey Reese doubled down the left-field line in the ninth. In between, Leiter no-hit the Reds."
