Just like last year, it is being discussed that if the Mets lose Pete Alonso, one option could be to sign Free Agent 3rd Baseman Alex Bregman and move Mark Vientos to 1B.  

Alex Bregman opted out of a 3 year $120M contract with the Red Sox in early November 2025, a contract that was signed late into the off-season in February '25.  A year older that Pete, he turns 32 in March of 2026.  He was praised for his leadership last year by Red Sox Hall Of Famer David Ortiz and he comes with the Qualifying offer he had last Winter.  

Overall he slashed .273/.360/.462, an .821 OPS, with 18 homers and 62 RBIs.  He missed 7 weeks from late May to July with a right quad strain doing much better before the injury than after: .298/.380/.546 in the first half and .250/.341/.386 in the 2nd half.  His worst month was September, .216/.310/.330.

David Stearns said he wants to improve the Mets run prevention in 2026 and Bregman, a Gold Glove winner in 2024, would do that.  He also could provide leadership which some analysts say the Mets could use.  But he'll be a year older and coming off a season with reduced time due to an injury.
