Mike Puma NY Post: Clay Holmes’ first Opening Day start quickly became a Mets mess. "Holmes was the losing pitcher in the Mets’ 3-1 loss to the Astros at Daikin Park after allowing three runs (one unearned) on five hits and four walks with a hit batsman over 4 ²/₃ innings....“I think the big thing was the walks,” Holmes said. “I gave them five free passes — the walks and a hit-by-pitch...to give them enough base runners to create some traffic there.”
Brian Joura Mets lose on Opening Day for second straight year. "Mets have gone 1-11 in last 12 games in Houston...Framber Valdez threw a bunch of pitches but he shut out the Mets over seven innings..In the eighth inning, Bryan Abreu walked the bases loaded. But he got first-pitch outs against both Jesse Winker and Brandon Nimmo...In the ninth, the Mets loaded the bases with no outs on two hits and a walk against Josh Hader...But Hayden Senger, in his first AB in the majors, struck out. Francisco Lindor hit a sac fly, which was followed by a terrible swing on a 3-2 pitch by Juan Soto.."
NY Post: Juan Soto reveals why he came up small in his first big Mets spot. “I was expecting to be up in that moment, that situation,’’ Soto said of the opportunity to potentially tie the game with an extra-base hit. “[Hader] let the ball go on that last pitch and got me on that one. It was a pretty good pitch down and away.”...Soto acknowledged he didn’t think a slider was coming.
Jorge Castillo ESPN.com: "Batting second, Soto cracked a single in his first plate appearance as a Met against veteran left-hander Framber Valdez. He walked in the third inning, flied out in the sixth and walked again -- on four pitches -- in the eighth. It was a typical Soto showing, skillfully patient but willing and able to pounce on mistakes...What followed was a one-on-one battle between two players elite in their respective crafts. Soto said he saw Hader, a five-time All-Star, "really well" even though he presented a difficult lefty-lefty matchup with a three-quarters delivery...Soto would have walked if he had laid off the 3-2 slider. But he didn't, and his first signature Mets moment will have to wait at least another day."
