Mets 11 Pirates 7 Post Game Notes - 3/26/2026
Mets: The Mets topped the Pirates, 11-7, in their first game of 2026...The Mets improved to 42-23 all-time on Opening Day, and their .646 winning percentage is best in Major League history...They lost their first eight Opening Day contests and have now won 42 of their last 57...The win snapped their two-game losing streak on Opening Day...The Mets move to 7-2 on Opening Day at Citi Field...The Mets 11 runs scored are tied for the second most runs they’ve scored on Opening Day, only trailing the 1994 team, which scored 12 runs on Opening Day.
- Mets batters drew nine walks and Mets pitchers issued none...It is only the fifth instance in franchise history (last 5/6/21 at STL).
- Their five runs scored in the first inning are the most they've ever scored in the first inning on Opening Day and their 10 plate appearances are their most in a single inning on Opening Day since they had 10 plate appearances in the fifth inning in 2018.
Freddy Peralta (5.0 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 7 K, 2 HR): He earned his first win as a Met after tossing 5.0 innings and striking out seven...It is his third consecutive Opening Day start, and he has struck out seven or more batters in each of those appearances (also: 2024 8K w/MIL at NYM and 2024 8K w/MIL at NYY)...He is the 39th pitcher in Major League history to have three or more Opening Day starts with seven or more strikeouts...He becomes the fourth pitcher in Mets history to record seven or more strikeouts on Opening Day in their Mets' debut (also: Johan Santana 2008, Pedro Martinez 2005 and Don Cardwell 1967).
Brett Baty (1-5, 3B, 3 RBI, R): Cleared the bases with a three-run triple in the first inning to put the Mets in front 5-2...Marks his third career triple...It is his seventh career game with three or more RBI.
Carson Benge (1-3, HR, RBI, 2 BB, 2 R): Lined a solo homer to right field in the sixth inning...Marked his first career Major League homer and hit...It is the second time that a Met has homered in his Major League Debut on Opening Day (also: Kaz Matsui 4/6/04 at ATL)...He is the 17th player in franchise history whose first career hit was a home run (last: Francisco Alvarez, 10/4/22 vs. WSH)...He becomes just the third Met to reach base three or more times in their debut on Opening Day (also: Rod Gasper 1969 and Kazuo Matsui 2004).
Bo Bichette (0-4, RBI): Collected his first RBI as a Met in his first plate appearance with New York in the first inning to cut the Pirates' lead to 2-1.
Marcus Semien (2-5, 2B, RBI): Hit an RBI double in the first inning to extend the Mets' lead to 5-3...Marked his first hit and RBI as a Met.
Luis Robert Jr. (2-4, 2 RBI, BB, R): Singled home a run in the fourth inning to push the Mets' lead to 6-3...Marked his first hit and RBI as a Met.
Juan Soto (2-4, RBI, BB, R): Reached base safely three times, including an RBI single in the fifth inning...It is the 301st game of his career in which he has reached base three or more times which is the most in the majors since he debuted in 2018.
Francisco Alvarez (2-4, HR, RBI, 2 R): Blasted a solo home run to left field in the sixth inning to push the Mets' lead to 11-5.
Brian Joura Mets360: Gut Reaction: Mets 11, Pirates 7 (3/26/26): "With a matchup of Freddy Peralta and Paul Skenes, it figured to be a pitcher’s duel. But neither starter had a day to remember, with Skenes getting knocked out in the first inning. It’s not that the Mets battered him. Rather it was a case of being more lucky than good. Skenes gave up two walks, a bloop, a bleeder and two balls hit to center that should have been outs but fell for hits, instead."
Abbey Mastracco NY Daily News: Pitching becomes afterthought in Mets’ 11-7 Opening Day win over Pirates. "It was a heavyweight prize fight that quickly turned into a slugfest when Brandon Lowe drove one of Peralta’s curveballs over the right field fence in the top of the first inning for a two-run shot. But the Mets quickly delivered the knockout blow to Skenes in the bottom of the frame, scoring five to chase one of the game’s best arms from the game after only 37 pitches."
Laura Albanese Newsday: Opening Day: 3 takeaways from the Mets' win over Paul Skenes and the Pirates. "1. They’re grinders...2. The stage isn’t too big for Carson Benge...3. Luis Robert Jr. is a weapon...Robert’s tools were on display Thursday as he went 2-for-4 with a run, two RBIs and a walk, legged out an infield hit and made a nice stumbling catch in center."
