Brian Joura Mets360: "The Mets scored three runs in the first inning and added two more in the second, with Bo Bichette hitting two-run homers in each of the first two frames. And then the roof caved in."

Anthony DiComo Mets.com: "Eighteen starts into Nolan McLean’s career, he finally submitted a clunker. To be fair, the damage on Tuesday at Nationals Park was not entirely McLean’s fault. The Mets committed multiple errors behind him, failed to make other defensive plays that could have softened the result and asked him to continue deep into the middle innings because they were operating with a critically short bullpen."

NY Post: "James Wood’s inside-the-park grand slam in the second inning sent McLean spiraling and he never recovered. In his worst career start he surrendered nine runs, six of which were earned, on eight hits and two walks with a hit batter over 5 ²/₃ innings. McLean’s ERA jumped from 2.92 to 3.57, but by working into the sixth he kept the Mets from further overextending a taxed bullpen."

Abbey Mastracco NY Daily News: "Wood drove a 1-1 sweeper 379 feet to left field. Morabito jumped for it at the wall, and the ball hit off his glove. Center fielder Tyrone Taylor seemed more concerned that Morabito hit his head, unaware the ball was still in play. Morabito recovered and chased after the ball as two runs scored, then a third. Marcus Semien, the cutoff man, caught the ball on the bounce and threw home, but it was too late."

AP Sports: "Richard Lovelady pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his third save...Morabito, making his major league debut, was 0 for 3 and was hit by a pitch."

1999

In a twin bill sweep of Milwaukee, Mets' third baseman Robin Ventura becomes the first major league player to hit a grand slam in both ends of a doubleheader. The infielder also hit a pair of 'grand salamis' in a game against Texas while playing for the 1995 White Sox.

2000

After being released earlier in the month by the Mets for not hustling, Rickey Henderson, in his first at-bat for the Mariners, hits his record 76th career leadoff home run, a shot off Esteban Yan in the team's 4-3 loss to Tampa Bay at Safeco Field. With the round-tripper, the future Hall of Fame outfielder joins Ted Williams and Willie McCovey as the third major leaguer to have homered in four different decades.

2017

Terry Collins, a 67 year-old baseball lifer, passes Davey Johnson (1984-1990) to become the longest-tenured manager in Mets history, reaching 1,013 games with the team. The oldest skipper in the majors, sees his charges hang on to a 7-5 victory when Addison Reed strikes out Angel pinch-hitter Danny Espinosa on a 3-2 count with the bases loaded after three runs have scored in the top of the ninth inning at Citi Field.
