READING, Pa. – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (28-28) dropped both games of the doubleheader to the Reading Fightin Phils (33-22), on Saturday night at FirstEnergy Stadium. Reading now holds a 5.5 game lead over Binghamton for first place in the Northeast Division with 13 games in the regular season.
Game 1: Reading 5, Binghamton 3
Binghamton got on the board first for the third time in this series and led 1-0 against right-hander Reese Dutton. Shortstop Marco Vargas and third baseman Jacob Reimer both walked, and catcher Chris Suero scored Vargas with an RBI single.
Suero has five RBIs over his last two games with four that have come in the first inning.
Against right-hander Luke Gabrysh (L, 1-1), Reading tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning. Shortstop Bryan Rincon hit his Eastern League-leading ninth leadoff home run and his second of the series.
Binghamton answered right back in the second frame. First baseman Corey Collins hit his second home run of the series, one that traveled 419 feet, and made it 2-1.
Then in the third inning, the Rumble Ponies captured a 3-1 advantage. Designated hitter Jefferson Rojas lasered a solo home run, his fifth over his last nine games and his 21st of the season. Rojas has hit six home runs as a member of the Mets organization.
Binghamton has homered 43 times in August across 25 games which leads the Eastern League and it has homered in 12-straight contests.
Reading used the long ball to make it a 3-2 game in the bottom half of the third inning. Catcher Caleb Ricketts clubbed a solo home run, which was his 10th of the year.
In the bottom of the fourth inning the Fightin Phils scored three runs on just one hit and captured a 5-3 lead. Gabrysh left the game with the bases loaded and two outs and was replaced by right-hander Dakota Hawkins.
With Hawkins on the mound, third baseman Carson DeMartini scored on a wild pitch for the inning’s first run, which tied the game. Rincon stepped in and walked to load the bases for designated hitter Dante Nori who walked in a run and gave Reading a 4-3 lead. Center fielder Pedro Leon capped off the inning, as he brought in the third run when he was hit by a pitch, which made it 5-3.
Against right-hander Jack Dallas (W, 3-1), Binghamton stranded two runners on after third baseman Jacob Reimer doubled and Suero walked.
Binghamton went down in order against right-hander Christian McGowan in the sixth inning and Hawkins put Reading down in order in the bottom of the sixth.
Right-hander Estibenzon Jimenez (S, 6) took the ball for Reading in the seventh inning. With two outs Reimer recorded his second hit of the game and set up Suero, who walked on seven pitches. Right fielder Eli Serrano III grounded out to first baseman Alex Binelas on a 108-mph line drive that Binelas knocked down and stepped on first to end the game.
Game 2: Reading 3, Binghamton 0
Binghamton was shut out for the 12th time this season and swept in a doubleheader for the third time this year.
Right-hander R.J. Gordon (L, 4-8) took the loss, despite recording a quality start in a complete game. Gordon allowed three earned runs on seven hits and two walks with six strikeouts. Gordon finished August with a 3-1 record and a 2.17 ERA in five starts.
In the second inning, Reading scored on a two-out RBI double from first baseman Bryson Ware. The Fightin Phils added two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on shortstop Raider Tello’s two-run double, which made it 3-0.
Reading’s starting pitcher Luke Russo (W, 11-8) tossed 5.0 scoreless innings with six strikeouts. Left-hander Mavis Graves pitched a scoreless sixth inning and right-hander Wen-Hui Pan recorded his second save with a scoreless seventh inning.
The Rumble Ponies stranded the bases loaded twice and left nine runners on base in the contest.
The Rumble Ponies close out a six-game series with the Reading Fightin Phils (Double-A, Philadelphia Phillies) on Sunday at FirstEnergy Stadium. First pitch is set for 5:15 p.m. The game will be broadcast on News Radio 1290 AM & 92.1 FM, and on the WNBF News Radio App.
Postgame Notes: Binghamton is now in fourth place in the Northeast Division and sits 5.5 games back of Reading for first place with 13 games remaining in the regular season…Reimer recorded three hits, two doubles, and reached base five times across the two games…Suero reached base in both games and extended his on-base streak to 18 games…Parada went 3-for-3 in the second game, which marked his second three-hit game of the season.
