PORTLAND, Maine – Infielder Marco Vargas chalked up four hits and a career-high four RBI as the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (22-23) held on to defeat the Portland Sea Dogs (23-22), 8-6, on Sunday afternoon at Delta Dental Park at Hadlock Field.
With the game tied 6-6 in the top of the eighth inning with two outs and the bases loaded, shortstop Marco Vargas delivered the eventual game-winning two-run single to give Binghamton an 8-6 lead.
Vargas set a career-high with four RBI and matched a career high of four hits that he set with Single-A St. Lucie on April 16, 2024. He is just the fourth Binghamton hitter on the active roster to have a four-hit game this season.
Vargas put Binghamton in front 1-0 behind his second Double-A home run. Right-hander Reidis Sena did not finish the inning and was replaced by right-hander Morgan McSweeny.
Binghamton scored again in the second inning to make it 2-0. Catcher Chris Suero singled and later stole third base to set up left fielder Corey Collins, who delivered a sacrifice fly. Suero tallied his 18th multi-hit game and his first three-hit game and chalked up two stolen bases to sit at 31 on the year.
Right-hander R.J. Gordon got the start for Binghamton. He went 4.0 innings and allowed four runs, but just two were earned on two hits. Portland tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the second inning.
Catcher Johanfran Garcia and second baseman Mason White both walked before left fielder Will Turner tallied an RBI single. Designated hitter Nate Baez drove in White one batter later on a groundout.
In the third inning, both sides would trade punches. Binghamton first took a 3-2 lead behind an RBI single from first baseman Jacob Reimer. He scored Vargas, who singled and stole second base.
Portland took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the third inning behind one hit with no earned runs being charged to Gordon. Right fielder Tyler McDonough led off the inning on base when second baseman Mitch Voit could not field a ground ball cleanly. First baseman Brooks Brannon walked and then shortstop Henry Godbout scored both on a two-run single, his first two RBIs at the Double-A level.
The Rumble Ponies answered for three runs in the fourth inning to go in front 6-4 against McSweeny for three runs and one off of right-hander Max Carlson. Suero walked, as center fielder John By followed with a single. The first run of the inning came on a sacrifice fly from right fielder D’Andre Smith, which scored Suero.
The order flipped to Voit, and he lasered an RBI double to score Bay from second base. Voit has 10 doubles and 10 RBI through 16 Double-A games. One batter later, Vargas tallied an RBI single to extend the lead by two runs.
The Sea Dogs faced right-hander Cristofer Gomez in the fifth inning and scored one run. With runners on first and third, first baseman Brooks Brannon grounded into a double-play but scored a run.
Right-hander Saul Garcia (W, 1-1) entered in the seventh inning with a 6-5 lead, but with one out, third baseman Jack Winnary clubbed a solo home run to tie the game for Portland at 6-6.
After Binghamton took an 8-6 lead in the top half of the eighth inning, right-hander Garrett Stratton (S, 3) threw a perfect bottom frame with a strikeout.
In the ninth inning, Stratton struck out two batters, and Voit got the final out as he dove to save a base hit and ended the game.
Binghamton took five out of six from Portland and are now 13-2 in the month of August.
The Rumble Ponies open up a six-game series with the Altoona Curve (Double-A, Pittsburgh Pirates) on Tuesday at Mirabito Stadium. First pitch is set for 6:07 p.m and the game will be broadcast on MiLB.TV, News Radio 1290 AM & 92.1 FM, and on the WNBF News Radio App.
