BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (24-23) scored in double digits for the sixth time in August and belted three home runs to power past the Altoona Curve (18-28), 10-6 on Wednesday night at Mirabito Stadium.
Binghamton wasted no time against right-hander Matt Ager, as second baseman Marco Vargas clubbed the first pitch he saw over the right-field wall to take a 1-0 lead. Vargas has 10 hits over his last three games with seven RBI and two home runs.
Three batters later, catcher Chris Suero smacked a solo home run, his 16th of the season, which matches a career-high that he set in 2025. Suero tallied his 19th multi-hit game with a double in the seventh inning.
Binghamton right-hander Dakota Hawkins tossed 3.0 scoreless innings and just two hits, and right-hander Cristofer Gomez followed with a scoreless fourth inning.
The Rumble Ponies added two more runs in the fifth inning to pull ahead 4-0. First baseman Jamari Baylor, in his Double-A debut, singled and stole second base, and Vargas two batters later drove him in with a single. Third baseman Jacob Reimer came to the plate with two outs and chalked up an RBI single to score Vargas. Reimer tallied his 14th multi-hit game.
Altoona exploded for five runs in the sixth inning against right-hander Bryce Conley, who allowed five runs over 1.2 innings pitched. Altoona had four consecutive hits to start the inning. Third baseman Murph Gray doubled, first baseman Callan Moss singled to set up left fielder Titus Dumitru, who drove in Gray with an RBI double. Catcher Easton Carmichael followed with an RBI double of his own to bring in Moss.
After designated hitter Ivan Brethowr was hit by a pitch and right fielder Jesus Castillo singled, shortstop Keiner Delgado drove them both in with a single to take a 5-4 lead.
Binghamton stormed back for two runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning to take a 6-5 lead. Designated hitter Vincent Perozo faced right-hander Mike Walsh (L, 0-3) with the bases loaded and was hit by a pitch to score center fielder John Bay. Then Vargas grounded out to score left fielder Corey Collins.
Between the sixth and seventh innings combined, Altoona and Binghamton combined for 12 runs. The Curve tied the game at 6-6 in the seventh inning, and Carmichael scored Dumitru, who doubled, with an RBI single. Carmichael has five RBI through the first two games of the series.
The Rumble Ponies put the game away in the seventh inning behind four runs and four consecutive hits to start the inning. Reimer singled, Suero doubled, and then Bay scored Reimer with an RBI single. Collins then stepped in and belted a three-run home run, his fifth Double-A big fly to make it 10-6 Rumble Ponies. Collins snapped an 0-for-14 tonight with two hits and three RBI.
Right-hander Douglas Orellana (W, 9-3) tossed 2.0 innings and allowed just one run and earned his team lead, ninth win. Right-hander Garrett Stratton tossed 1.1 scoreless frames to shut the door, and Stratton has not allowed a run in six straight outings.
Binghamton has scored double-digit runs in six games in August and has a 15-2 record this month.
The Rumble Ponies continue a six-game series with the Altoona Curve (Double-A, Pittsburgh Pirates) on Thursday at Mirabito Stadium. First pitch is set for 6:07 p.m and the game will be broadcast on MiLB.TV, News Radio 1290 AM & 92.1 FM, and on the WNBF News Radio App.
