Syracuse, N.Y. – The Syracuse Mets saw an early lead slip away on Wednesday night at NBT Bank Stadium, falling to the Worcester Red Sox, 9-7.
Syracuse (22-24, 60-61) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Nick Morabito doubled to begin the frame, moved to third on an Émilien Pitre lineout and scored when Ronny Mauricio singled into right field for a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, MJ Melendez launched a two-run home run to right field, his 15th homer of the season, scoring Mauricio and stretching the lead to 3-0.
Worcester (27-19, 63-54) got on the board in the top of the fourth. Nate Eaton doubled, moved to third on a groundout and scored on Allan Castro’s groundout, cutting Syracuse’s lead to 3-1.
The Mets answered in the bottom half. Jose Ramos drew a two-out walk before Hayden Senger hit a two-run home run to left-center field, his 10th of the season, extending the Syracuse advantage to 5-1.
Worcester erased the four-run deficit with a six-run top of the fifth. Brett Harris walked and Vinny Capra singled before Jason Delay doubled home both runners, making it 5-3. Isiah Kiner-Falefa followed with a single, and Trevor Story singled home Delay to trim the lead to 5-4. Chris Devenski then replaced Jonathan Santucci, and after striking out Eaton, Romy Gonzalez hit a three-run home run to left-center field, putting Worcester in front, 7-5.
Syracuse pulled within one in the sixth. Nick Lorusso walked and Ramos was hit by a pitch before Senger moved both runners over with a sacrifice bunt. Zack Short then reached on a throwing error by third baseman Vinny Capra, allowing Lorusso to score and cutting Worcester’s lead to 7-6.
The Red Sox added two insurance runs in the eighth. Harris singled and Capra and Delay walked to load the bases with nobody out. Mikey Romero drew a bases-loaded walk to force home Harris for an 8-6 lead, and Franklin Arias followed with an RBI single that scored Capra and made it 9-6.
The Mets got one back in the bottom of the eighth. Ramos and Short walked before Morabito doubled into left field, scoring Ramos and trimming the deficit to 9-7. Worcester kept Short at third and escaped the inning before retiring Syracuse in order in the ninth to finish the game.
On the mound, Santucci allowed six runs on six hits over four innings, walking four and striking out three. Devenski allowed one run on two hits with two walks and one strikeout in one inning. Zach Franklin followed with two scoreless, hitless innings, allowing no walks and striking out one. Matt Turner faced five batters without recording an out in the eighth, allowing two runs on two hits and three walks.
