BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (33-30) were stunned by the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (24-39) in their regular-season home finale, as the Fisher Cats scored six runs in the ninth inning to rally for a 7-6 victory at Mirabito Stadium on Sunday night.
The Rumble Ponies led 6-1 in the top of the ninth inning when right-hander Carlos Guzman (L, 6-2) entered in relief, but six consecutive Fisher Cats reached base. Right fielder Carter Cunningham made it 6-2 with an RBI double and two batters later third baseman Tucker Toman hit an RBI single to cut the deficit to 6-3.
Catcher Edward Duran was the final batter Guzman would face when he delivered an RBI single. Guzman surrendered six earned runs and did not record an out.
Left-hander Gabby Rodriguez took the ball and retired two batters to hold the bases loaded, until designated hitter Aaron Parker powered a bases-clearing double to give New Hampshire a 7-6 lead. Binghamton entered the game 44-6 when they led after eight innings until Sunday night’s game.
Binghamton looked for their ninth walk-off win of the season down 7-6 in the ninth inning against right-hander Kelena Sauer (S, 3). Second baseman Mitch Voit led-off with a single, and with one out designated hitter Jefferson Rojas reached on an infield single.
Third baseman Jacob Reimer stepped in with the winning run in Rojas off first base, but grounded into a game-ending double play on a ground ball to Cutter Coffey at shortstop.
Binghamton right-hander Gabe Davis handed in 4.1 innings pitched and surrendered just one earned run behind five strikeouts and no walks. New Hampshire captured a 1-0 lead in the third inning.
Center fielder Alexis Hernandez belted a solo home run with two outs in the third inning. Davis struck out Parker on a 100 mile per hour fastball to end the frame.
The Rumble Ponies took a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the fourth inning as the first four batters all reached. Shortstop Marco Vargas walked, and Rojas singled to set up Reimer who delivered a two-run single against right-hander Austin Cates.
Binghamton right-hander Bryce Conley handed in 2.2 scoreless frames and surrendered just one hit with three strikeouts.
In the seventh inning, the Rumble Ponies pulled ahead 6-1 with a four run frame. Left fielder Corey Collins and center fielder JT Benson both singled to begin the rally. With two outs and two strikes, Vargas slapped an RBI single to make it 3-1.
One batter later, Rojas hammered a three-run home run that went 407 feet over the left field wall. It was the 24th home run of the year at Double-A for Rojas and his ninth with Binghamton. He has hit seven home runs over his last 13 games.
Right-hander Brendan Girton pitched a scoreless eighth inning with two strikeouts for Binghamton and on the other side right-hander Gage Stanifer (W, 6-8) cashed in a scoreless eighth inning with four strikeouts. Binghamton stranded runners on second and third base as catcher Chris Suero reached on a dropped third strike and right fielder Eli Serrano III walked.
The Rumble Ponies went 5-for-20 with runners in scoring position and left seven on base in the loss.
Binghamton enters the final six games of the regular season in second place, 3.5 games behind the Reading Fightin Phils for the top spot in the Northeast Division. The Reading Fightin Phils open a six-game home series against the Erie SeaWolves, the second-half Southwest Division champions.
Binghamton would be eliminated with any combination of three Reading wins or three Binghamton losses.
The Rumble Ponies open up a six-game series with the Portland Sea Dogs (Double-A-Boston Red Sox) on Tuesday at Hadlock Field. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m and the game will be broadcast on News Radio 1290 AM & 92.1 FM, and on the WNBF News Radio App.
